    An outbreak of measles has been confirmed in Stellenbosch. The Western Cape Department of Health said on Thursday that it had identified five confirmed measles cases at a school in the town.

    The city said the Eastern and Northern districts ? which are closest to the school where the outbreak began ? are being prioritised for the vaccination drive. Vaccines will be given to children under five and teenagers under 15. "For the Eastern District the target population of under 15 to be vaccinated is almost 150 000?'' the city said.

    Next week the vaccination drive will begin in Khayelitsha as well as other areas of the city...

      JOHANNESBURG ? The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday issued a measles alert in Johannesburg and warned schools to be on the lookout for symptoms after several cases were confirmed.

      ?There have been six confirmed cases of measles in Johannesburg, as at 15 March. The cases were mostly primary school children, previously unvaccinated against measles,? said NICD in a statement.

      ?Additionally there has been one confirmed case of measles in Rustenburg, North West Province. These cases follow a confirmed outbreak of measles in the Western Cape in the first few months of this year ? currently totalling 29 cases.?...

            There is an outbreak of measles cases in Durban and the Pietermaritzburg region? according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases.

            On Monday? 23 cases of measles had been confirmed. Measles is one of the most infectious viruses on earth and can be fatal or lead to deafness.

              Private labs have been roped in to do diagnostic tests as the number of suspected measles cases increases.

              The National Institute for Communicable Diseases said since the outbreak was declared in KwaZulu-Natal on September 1, 26 people have been confirmed to have the highly contagious respiratory infection.

              eThekwini still has the highest number of confirmed cases, now 17, while uMgungudlovu now has the most number of suspected cases, 14.

              By the end of last week, there were 54 more people who were suspected to have contracted the disease and had been tested. If these are confirmed, it will mean the outbreak has spread to eight of the 11 districts in the province.

              The NICD and the provincial department of health have turned to private laboratory networks to provide diagnostic testing...
