Japan warns on measles after infected fan joins Bieber concert
    AFP?August 26, 2016

Japanese authorities have warned of a possible measles outbreak after a fan who went to a Justin Bieber concert near Tokyo was diagnosed with the contagious disease, officials said Friday.

A 19-year-old man had a fever of more than 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) and a rash over his body after returning from Indonesia earlier this month...

...Despite the condition, the man, whose name was withheld, went to Bieber's concert on August 14 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, east of Tokyo, where some 25,000 fans gathered for the event, they said.

The man, from the western Japanese city of Nishinomiya, then stopped in Tokyo and neighbouring Kanagawa prefecture before returning home on August 19, when he was finally diagnosed with measles...

OSAKA (TR) ? The Osaka Prefectural Government is working to contain an outbreak of measles at a management company at Kansai International Airport that began about one month ago, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Sept. 3).

Japan measles outbreak hits 41 cases, foreign strain accounting for majority
By Roland Shichijo on September 7, 2016

TOKYO (TR) ? There were nine more cases of measles since last week, bringing the total number of people with the virus to 41, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) announced on Tuesday.

Officials are investigating reports of several cases breaking out at a Justin Bieber concert held in Chiba Prefecture last month as well as among workers at Kansai International Airport, TV Asahi reports (September 6).

The figure for the outbreak at the airport is expected to rise since numerous cases have yet to be reported to the health center, CBnews reported.

The latest total has already surpassed the 35 cases of measles logged in the last one-year period, local media reported.

By administrative district, Chiba Prefeture currently holds the highest number of cases at 12, followed by Tokyo and Hyogo Prefecture with 6 each, Saitama and Osaka Prefecture with 3 each, and Mie Prefecture with 2, according to CBnews...

Kansai airport begins vaccinating workers after measles outbreak
        by Eric Johnston, Staff Writer
        Sep 8, 2016

OSAKA ? Kansai International Airport began vaccinating its workers against measles Thursday following an outbreak that has so far infected 39 people, mostly younger airport employees who were never vaccinated against the disease.

The move comes just over three weeks after the first case was confirmed on Aug. 17, when a female employee in her 20s who handles international flights was diagnosed. Over the following weeks, the outbreak spread, mainly among Kansai airport workers.

As of Thursday, 33 workers had been confirmed as having caught the measles, along with two medical staff who treated them; 31 had recovered, airport officials said.

But with four passengers also infected, and another 10 people in Osaka Prefecture suspected as having caught the disease, concerns of a major outbreak in the region remain...

Japan measles outbreak: 7 more cases confirmed in Hyogo
By Roland Shichijo on September 9, 2016

HYOGO (TR) ? Seven more cases of measles were confirmed here on Thursday as Japan grapples with a mostly foreign strain of the virus it once eradicated years ago.

Six people in Amagasaki City were infected by an outbreak of measles originating from a nursery, while a 14-year-old female middle school student was confirmed to be infected on Tuesday, the Asahi Shimbun reports (September 8).

Amagasaki officials are screening several other children who are exhibiting symptoms, adding that none of the infected individuals recently traveled or visited Kansai International Airport.

But a female worker at the airport in her 20s who has measles returned home to Amagasaki on August 24 and broke out with a fever and rash, officials said...

115 measles cases confirmed in Japan, vaccine stocks low
            By YUSUKE OGAWA/ Staff Writer
            September 21, 2016 at 17:35 JST

Measles is rapidly spreading in Japan with 115 confirmed cases this year so far, but the nation appears to hold insufficient stocks of an immunization vaccine for everyone who needs it.

"Some experts and medical organizations are complaining that there is not enough vaccine,? said members of an expert panel at the health ministry.

The nation?s measles vaccination program should be given top priority, the panel members added.

Of the 115 cases confirmed this year by Sept. 11, 96 of those occurred within the last four weeks, according to preliminary figures released on Sept. 20 by the Tokyo-based National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID)...
