VDH: Confirmed case of measles in a child in NoVA

RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A preschool-aged child is Virginia’s second confirmed case of measles so far this year.

The Virginia Department of Health says the patient, who recently traveled internationally, lives in Northern Virginia.

Other people may have been exposed to the virus at the Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center Emergency Department and Executive Medicine Suite in Fort Belvoir between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight on Jan. 9.

People may have also been exposed on a train that traveled through several neighboring states and Washington, D.C.

That train, the Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 175, went from William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in Philadelphia to Washington Union Station in D.C. between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 7.

Additional potential exposure sites have been identified in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Another confirmed case of measles was reported in Central Virginia, again involving a preschool-aged child...

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Department of Health has reported another confirmed case of measles, involving a preschool-age child from the Northern Region who recently traveled internationally. There have now been three measles cases reported in Virginia in 2026.

Virginia Health Officials Investigating a Potential Measles Exposure in Northern Virginia
Virginia Department of Health is Working to Identify People Who Are at Risk

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) was notified of a confirmed case of measles that traveled through Washington Dulles International Airport Saturday, January 24. The person is a resident of another state. To protect the patient’s privacy, VDH will not provide any additional information about the patient. Health officials are coordinating an effort to identify people who might have been exposed, including contacting potentially exposed passengers on specific flights.

Listed below are the dates, times, and locations of the potential exposure sites in Virginia:

Dulles International Airport (IAD): in Concourse B, on transportation to the International Arrivals Building (IAB) and in the baggage claim area between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday, January 24.
Dulles shuttle bus to the rental car facilities between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 24.
Other exposure sites will be listed here.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Virginia health officials on Wednesday confirmed that a person in the area has been diagnosed with a case of measles.

Virginia has reported five measles cases in 2026. You can visit the department of health’s measles website for additional cases and exposure sites.

Although they’ve declined to identify the person in order to protect their identity, officials did note they are an adult.

They’re also publishing a list of potential exposure sites, which include:

The Ian Apartment Complex, located at 2249 Woodland Grove Place in Herndon, any time between Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 31.
Kumo Sushi, located at 2338 Woodland Crossing Drive in Herndon, between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday, January 24.

RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Virginia Department of Health is investigating another confirmed case of measles and a potential exposure involving a confirmed case from another state.

According to a release, the latest confirmed case of measles is in a pre-school age child four years old or younger that lives in Northern Virginia...

Adult with measles possibly exposed others in Fairfax County

Eight Virginians have come down with measles in 2026. The latest case involves an adult who possibly exposed others to the virus in Fairfax County last week, according to Virginia health officials who said the infected person had recently traveled internationally.

The Virginia Department of Health has warned anyone who was around the patient that they could be at risk of developing the virus, especially those who are too young to get the vaccine or are otherwise unvaccinated.

These are the possible exposure sites and times:

Giant Food, located at 8941 Ox Road in Lorton, between 3:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Inova-GoHealth Urgent Care, Lorton Marketplace, located at 9427 Lorton Market St. in Lorton, between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13.
Inova HealthPlex Lorton Emergency Room, located at 9321 Sanger St. in Lorton, between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.

With there being several other cases in Virginia so far this year, several of those patients also spent time in D.C. and possibly exposed others...

2 Measles Cases Confirmed In NoVA: Here's Where
Two adults with the measles made stops at stores, a church and a clinic in Manassas, Alexandria and Gainesville, VA health officials said.

MANASSAS, VA — Two adults with the measles who had recently traveled together within the United States visited multiple stores, a church and a medical clinic and the last 10 days, the Virginia Department of Health said.

The patients made stops between Feb. 13 and 17 at several stores in the Manassas area, including a Harris Teeter, Walmart, Best Buy, Lidl and Target.

Health officials are coordinating an effort to identify people who might have been exposed.

Anyone who came in contact with the measles patients would most likely become sick between Feb. 18 and March 10, authorities said.

Virginia Health Officials Investigating a Measles Case in the Central Region

BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is reporting a confirmed case of measles in a school age child (5-12 years) in the Central Region. The patient did not travel and was exposed to measles locally. To protect the family’s privacy, VDH will not provide any additional information about the patient.

Based on this information, VDH has reason to suspect that measles virus is circulating in the Buckingham County area, and that there are likely more cases than have been reported. VDH is advising people in the area to make sure they are up to date on their MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, watch for symptoms of measles, and if they feel sick to stay home and contact their healthcare provider.

The Virginia Department of Health on Wednesday issued notice of a measles outbreak in Buckingham County.

In a letter to clinicians, Health Commissioner Dr. Cameron Webb said 12 cases have been identified in the outbreak as of May 13.

“No patients reported recent travel,” Webb said in the letter. “Without travel, the timing of these cases suggests local transmission. There are likely more measles cases than have been reported.”...

VIRGINIA, USA — The Virginia Department of Health is launching a new measles dashboard as cases continue to rise across the Commonwealth and nationwide.

State Health Commissioner Cameron Webb said the dashboard is meant to give Virginians real-time information about measles trends and possible exposure risks.

“It’s important for Virginians to know what is happening in their communities in real time,” Webb said. “This dashboard is our commitment to being as transparent as possible about the impact of measles across the Commonwealth.”

The dashboard tracks reported measles cases, hospitalizations and deaths, along with case numbers by age and health district. VDH said updates will be posted every Tuesday and Thursday around noon.

So far in 2026, Virginia has reported 40 measles cases, including 17 tied to an outbreak in Buckingham County. Health officials said this total has already far surpassed the five cases reported statewide in 2025.

In the Eastern district, which encompasses Hampton Roads, only one case has been confirmed in 2026. The vast majority of the 40 cases involve children under 17...

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is launching a new measles dashboard. This dashboard shows key information to help Virginians see measles trends, understand the impact, and know their risk of exposure as measles cases increase nationally and across the Commonwealth.

“It’s important for Virginians to know what is happening in their communities in real time,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. Cameron Webb. “This dashboard is our commitment to being as transparent as possible about the impact of measles across the Commonwealth. When people have clear, accessible information, they can make informed decisions to protect themselves and their families.”

The dashboard shows how many measles cases, hospitalizations, and deaths have been reported. You can also see case numbers by age, health district, and other key factors. Updates will be posted Tuesdays and Thursdays around noon.

To date in 2026, VDH has reported 40 cases of measles. Of those cases, 17 are related to an outbreak in Buckingham County. A measles outbreak is defined as three or more related cases among members of different households. The number of cases this year has quickly outpaced the five reported cases from last year.

Measles activity in the U.S., including Virginia, is rising due to increased travel-related exposures, both international and domestic, and declining national vaccination rates. Children younger than 12 months of age and others who are not vaccinated are very susceptible to infection if they are exposed to someone with measles.

The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best protection against measles. Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective. If you or a loved one are not up-to-date with routine MMR vaccines, contact your healthcare provider or call your local health department to schedule a vaccine appointment today. People who live in or visit the Buckingham County area should talk with their healthcare provider about outbreak vaccine recommendations. This includes considering an early MMR dose for infants older than six months to provide protection while measles is circulating in the community.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. Most people in Virginia have immunity to measles through vaccination or previous infection with measles. Approximately 95% of kindergarteners in Virginia are fully vaccinated against measles. However, some communities within Virginia may have lower vaccination rates, making them more at risk to measles outbreaks. Fortunately, an increasing number of people are seeking to confirm their MMR vaccine status following Virginia measles exposure events.
