NMDOH declares measles outbreak in Lea County
By: Source NM Staff - February 14, 2025 4:18 pm

Two adults in Lea County tested positive for measles on Thursday, bringing the county’s total cases to three, following a teen’s confirmed case earlier this week—the first of the year for the state. Those three cases constitute an outbreak under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s outbreak criteria, the New Mexico Department of Health said on Friday.

The county borders Gaines County, Texas, where cases have grown from two to 48 in two weeks, DOH said, and doubled in just a few days, according to national reporting. Officials say a connection between New Mexico’s cases to the Texas outbreak is suspected but unconfirmed...

Additional measles case reported in Lea County
By Jim Hilley Roswell Daily Record 1 hr ago

Another case of measles has been reported in Lea County, according to a Thursday email from Robert Nott, communication director for the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). The case brings the total number of cases in the county this month to nine.

Nott said the person in the most recent case is isolating, and the NMDOH is conducting contact tracing on the individual.

The ongoing outbreak in West Texas and Lea County has now infected at least 67 people. No additional cases had been reported in the Gaines County area by the Texas Department of State Health Services as of 2 p.m. MST, Thursday.

Nott said there have been no hospitalizations or deaths in New Mexico related to the outbreak, and there is still no confirmed connection between any of the New Mexico cases and the confirmed cases in Texas...

NMDOH reports new measles case in deceased Lea County resident
By: Danielle Prokop - March 6, 2025 3:29 pm

An unvaccinated Lea County resident tested positive for measles after their death, New Mexico Health officials announced Thursday.

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator is still investigating the resident’s cause of death, but the NMDOH Scientific Laboratory confirmed the presence of the measles virus.

The resident, according to an NMDOH news release, was over the age of 18 and did not seek medical attention before their death.

The positive case now brings the number of reported measles cases in New Mexico to 10, all located in Lea County. Four infections are in children under the age of 17...

NM measles cases tripled in a matter of days
The reported cases are in Lea County
by Matthew Reichbach 27 minutes ago
By Matthew Reichbach

The number of confirmed measles cases in New Mexico jumped to 30 as of Friday, an increase of 20 from previously reported numbers. All confirmed cases are in Lea County so far.

The Tuesday update from the New Mexico Department of Health said there were just nine confirmed cases of measles, then the department included another case on Thursday, saying a deceased individual tested positive for measles. It would be the first measles death in New Mexico in at least 40 years.

The department previously declared an outbreak of measles when there were three unrelated cases.

“Because measles is so contagious, additional cases are likely to occur in Lea County and the surrounding communities,” according to the NMDOH measles dashboard.

Of the cases, none are hospitalized. Of the 30 cases, 11 are under the age of 18, 15 are older than 18 and the other four are undetermined as of yet...

The New Mexico Department of Health announced three additional cases of measles in the department’s Tuesday update. One of the newly confirmed cases is in Eddy County, the first case outside of Lea County.

The department said this is not a rapidly expanding outbreak and that cases have been occurring “steadily over time.” Only one case so far has required hospitalization, and one person who died had measles, though the cause of death has not yet been announced.

The newly added cases include those who were previously ill and did not have the disease identified until after the illness, per the state measles dashboard.

Most of the confirmed measles cases involve unvaccinated residents, the department said...

Measles outbreak spreads to Eddy County
March 11, 2025Free, News

Carlsbad Current-Argus

Eddy County saw its first case of measles amid an outbreak that reportedly started in Lea County and tripled last week from 10 to 33 infections as of Tuesday.

The viral outbreak caused at least one Lea County adult’s death and continued to spread, as health officials increased their investigations to uncover more cases of the disease.

Health officials believe the outbreak started Feb. 9 with infections spreading from West Texas after originating in Gaines County and reaching to several other Texas counties.

As of Monday, Lea and Eddy counties were the only in New Mexico where infections were reported. On March 6 a deceased adult in Lea County tested positive for the virus, although the official cause of death was yet to be announced by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

There was one case in Eddy County as of Tuesday, and 32 people infected in Lea County, the New Mexico Department of Health reported. Health officials said 27 patients were not vaccinated. The vaccination status of the other five was unknown.

Health officials said five of those infected were ages 0-4, eight were in the 5-17 age range and 18 infections involved adults 18 and older. The age of the other two people infected had not been determined...

NMDOH: Possible measles exposure in Guadalupe and Valencia counties
By: Danielle Prokop - March 18, 2025 3:55 pm

New Mexico health officials warned Tuesday that a Texas traveler potentially exposed people to measles in Guadalupe and Valencia counties last week at a gas station, hotel, restaurant and a church.

The exposures occurred over two days from March 8-10, health officials said. Measles is an airborne, highly contagious respiratory disease, spread through contact with droplets from an infected person’s coughs or sneezes. The airborne particles can hang around for hours.

The advisory listed the following locations and times for potential measles exposure:

2-4:30 pm, March 8: TA Travel Center, 2634 U.S. Route 66 in Santa Rosa
March 8-9: Days Inn by Wyndham on 1919 Main Street in Los Lunas Noon to 3:30 p.m.
Noon to 3:30 p.m.,March 9: Sopa’s Restaurant at 1700 Bosque Farms Boulevard in Bosque Farms
8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., March 10: Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3674 NM-47 in Peralta...

...In addition to the exposure advisory, New Mexico health officials reported an additional three measles cases Tuesday, all in Lea County, bringing the statewide total to 38 cases.

Two hospitalizations remain in Lea County, but health officials have not released additional information about them, citing health privacy laws.

New Mexico Department of Health said a death announced March 6, a Lea County unvaccinated adult remains under investigation. Eddy County stands at two cases, with no new ones reported today.

In total, New Mexico’s measles cases include seven children aged 0 to 4; 10 children aged 7 to 17; 20 infections in adults; and one case still pending...

New Mexico measles cases continue to rise in SE corner
By: Danielle Prokop - March 21, 2025 4:45 pm

New Mexico on Friday reported four new measles cases in Lea county — bringing the total statewide to 42 infections, all in the state’s southeast corner.

The small rise in cases doesn’t indicate the end of the outbreak, NMDOH Communications Director Robert Nott told Source NM.

“We don’t want people to think the threat of measles is declining or over,” he said. “We’re still in spring break for some school districts and people are traveling.”

Current measles cases include eight young children aged 0 to 4-years old; 10 school aged children and 23 infections in adults.

On Tuesday, The New Mexico Department of Health warned that a Texas traveler earlier this month exposed people in Guadalupe and Valencia counties to measles over the course of two days at a church, restaurant, gas station and hotel.

Health officials said they have no additional information since issuing the advisory...

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The New Mexico Department of Health just reported Doña Ana County's first measles case. The department says an unvaccinated child who tested positive is the 63rd New Mexican reported to have measles.

Officials did not provide any other details about who the child is. They did provide the following dates and time when residents may have been exposed to measles:

April 2, from noon - 6 p.m. at Kid’s Kountry Place Preschool and Childcare, 3704 Elks Drive.
April 3, 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) Family Medicine Center, 2605 Terrace Drive.

Health officials report additional Eddy County measles case
By: Danielle Prokop - April 25, 2025 2:57 pm

New Mexico Health officials reported one additional New Mexico measles case Friday, this time an adult in Eddy County, bringing the total reported infections to 66.

The slow drip of cases in recent weeks does not indicate the outbreak is abating, according to New Mexico Department of Health Communications Director Robert Nott, who told Source NM that symptoms can appear a week or more after infections.

“The seemingly slow increase in measles cases in New Mexico should not be taken as a sign we are anywhere near out of the woods with this outbreak,” Nott said in a written statement. “We see continued measles spread in bordering areas — Mexico and Texas, for example — so there is always the potential for a new introduction of cases in New Mexico.”

Nott also noted that cases may rise in coming weeks after recent Easter weekend gatherings, given that “symptoms of measles do not appear until roughly a week (or more) after infection.”

The majority of measles cases in New Mexico remain in Lea County, which has 61 cases; the state has had six hospitalizations since the outbreak began in neighboring Gaines County, Texas, just across the state line. Cases in Doña Ana and Chaves counties remain unchanged, with one reported case each...
