    Diphtheria: Four die, 28 hospitalised in Kano

    Twenty-eight people have been hospitalised while four others have died following a fresh outbreak of diphtheria in Kano State.

    The outbreak according to a statement on Thursday happened in villages in the Mingibir Local Government Area of the state.

    The Information Officer of the local government, Tasiu Dadin-Duniya, in a statement on Thursday, said, “Four children have died of diphtheria and 28 children have contracted the disease in Kwarkiya, Kuru, Kunya and Minjibir villages in the Minjibir Local Government Area of the state...

    SITUATION ANALYSIS

    ...Diphtheria outbreak continues to pose a huge threat to at-risk communities in Nigeria. This deadly disease which began in week 19 of 2022 and has been spreading to other states as reported by the latest sitrep by the NCDC. Cumulatively from epi-week 19, 2022 – epi-week 11, 2024, Nigeria has recorded 28,975 suspected cases in 35 states and 317 LGAs; Kano, Yobe, Katsina, Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, aand Jigawa account for 96.4% of the cases. Total confirmed cases is 16,518 with 839 deaths and CFR of 5.0%. According to monitoring feedbacks from the field, there are now cases of diphtheria cases in being reported in Platueu and Ekiti States.
