    Outbreaks of mumps have become widespread around the country, the Health Service Executive has said.

    There were 132 cases of mumps reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre last week...

    It follows a sharp increase in the number of cases of the illness last year.

    A FREE DOSE of the MMR vaccine is being offered to anyone between the ages of 11 and 30 as part of a HSE initiative to counter a sharp rise in mumps cases.

    The health service is offering the measure to anyone who has not had two doses of the MMR vaccine, or is unsure of their vaccine status.

    It follows what is being described as a “significant” increase in the number of mumps cases, particularly in secondary schools and third level institutions.

    More than 2,700 cases of the disease were reported last year, compared with 573 cases in 2018. A further 253 cases have been notified to the HSE so far this year, with almost half of these coming since dozens of cases were reported last week...

      Mumps confirmed in Schull school

      A CONFIRMED case of mumps, a potentially serious disease which can cause male sterility, has been reported in Schull Community College.
      The case is one of 25 reported in the county so far this year, compared to 94 for all of last year and 36 for all of 2018...

        More than 1,000 new cases of mumps were recorded in the first six weeks of the year, in the latest surge in a year-long outbreak of the disease.

        The 1,020 cases notified to the HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre is almost twice the number of mumps cases that occurred in the whole of 2018...

          Kerry senior hurling boss Fintan O’Connor has reported that he has three players who have contracted mumps and he will not know until Friday night whether that number has increased.

          Kerry County Board has confirmed that medical advice and HSE protocols are being followed and all appropriate measures are being taken...

            ...Yesterday, Cork Institute of Technology confirmed that they had warned around 12,000 students of several cases of mumps that had been diagnosed on campus and sent detailed advice on how to protect themselves from the contagious viral infection.

            Another outbreak has been confirmed at a well-known primary school in the Fermoy area, with several pupils sent home as the HSE has issued advice to parents on how to deal with Mumps.

            Ireland is now facing what the HSE calls a "national outbreak" with 263 cases reported last week - most in young children or teens...

                575 mumps cases reported in Cork and Kerry

                A startling 575 cases of mumps have been reported in the Cork and Kerry region so far this year.

                The figure is higher than the total number of mumps cases reported nationally in 2018, when 573 cases were identified.

                According to new data published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), 97 cases of the disease were reported around the country last week alone as part of a continuing national mumps outbreak, which first started back in 2018...
