    Fears of mumps outbreak at Exeter University after surge in cases
    Public Health England has confirmed they are urging students to get MMR vaccinations

    An outbreak of mumps has been reported in Exeter, with seven new cases in one week listed in the Statutory Notifications of Infections Diseases report by Public Health England.

    Public Health England (PHE) is reminding students to be alert to symptoms of mumps following a number of cases reported among students at the University of Exeter.

    PHE has provided information about mumps for the university to share with students and staff...

    ...It comes after another outbreak of mumps in Nottingham where there have been 78 confirmed cases last week - again associated with students at the university...

    ...In the week ending March 31, there were seven notifiable cases in Exeter out of a total of 10 reported in the whole of Devon - with one in East Devon, one in Teignbridge and one in Torbay.

    Nationally the number of mumps cases fell last week, dropping from 312 down to 260 in England and Wales. There were none in neighbouring Dorset or Somerset...

    Multiple cases of mumps have been reported from students at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The disease is a highly contagious viral infection which can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms...

    ...The reports of the disease at Cardiff, follow news earlier this year of 241 suspected and 51 confirmed cases of mumps in total at Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent.

    A spokesperson for Cardiff Met University has stated:

        Suspected cases of mumps are at record levels in Bath and North East Somerset - as health officials call on people to get vaccinated.

        There have been 78 suspected cases of mumps in the area in the first 20 weeks of 2019.

        This compares to just five in the same period in 2018, and is the highest number in the first 20 weeks of a year since records began in 2011.

        The area also saw two suspected cases of measles at the start of this year, although that was down from four last year...

          There has been a sharp ascent in instances of mumps in Northern Ireland since the beginning of 2019. The Public Health Agency (PHA) has affirmed 198 instances of the sickness since 1 January. This is very nearly multiple times the number of cases affirmed by the PHA in 2018, when there was 66 research centre affirmed occurrences of mumps, contrasted with 191 of every 2017.

          Mumps is infectious viral contamination that causes swelling of the organs. As indicated by the PHA, mumps, for the most part, influences youthful grown-ups and 53% of cases in 2018 were in the 15-24-year age gathering.             Corpus warns students of mumps outbreak
            In an email from the College Nurse and Welfare Dean, students were advised to "not attend tutorial, lectures or interact with other students for 5 days after the initial development".

            Corpus Christi has issued an email warning students of a mumps outbreak amongst the student population.

            In an email addressed to ?all students and tutors?, Corpus Christi?s Welfare Dean and College Nurse wrote that: ?A number of students have been diagnosed with mumps so we thought it important to send out a message advising students what they need to look out for and what to do if they think they have mumps and advising tutors that mumps is circulating amongst the student body.?...

              England: Confirmed mumps cases highest in five years

              Cases of mumps in England have increased dramatically since the last quarter of 2018, according to the latest data from Public Health England (PHE).

              Provisional data from PHE shows 756 laboratory confirmed mumps cases in the first quarter of 2019, this compares with 162 confirmed cases reported during the fourth quarter of 2018.

              In fact, the 756 cases reported this past quarter is the highest number since the second quarter of 2014 when 784 cases were confirmed...

                Rates of mumps in Coventry are at their highest since comparable records began in 2011

                Cases of suspected mumps are rocketing in Coventry and Warwickshire with 141 reported so far this year.

                That compares to 48 suspected cases in the same period in 2018.

                There have been 38 cases in Coventry so far in 2019, up from 21 in 2018, with 103 cases in Warwickshire, up from 27.

                As Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned of the dangers of the "anti-vaccination myth", failure to keep up with the MMR jab has been raised as a concern.

                The 141 cases reported in Coventry and Warwickshire were flagged up between January 1 and July 7.

                Across the West Midlands, there were 176 confirmed cases of mumps between January and May.
                There were 83 in the whole of 2018...

                  Record numbers of suspected mumps cases have been reported in Coventry and Warwickshire in the past three months.

                  The ongoing spike in cases - repeated in other parts of the country - has sparked calls from health experts for parents to make sure their children get all necessary vaccinations.

                  There were 22 suspected cases of mumps reported in Coventry in July, August and September, according to figures compiled by Public Health England (PHE).

                  This is up from the four cases reported in the same period in 2018.

                    There have been cases of mumps reported across universities and student accommodations in Cardiff.

                    Public Health Wales said they have been informed of 28 suspected cases of mumps among students who attend universities in Cardiff and Cwm Taf.

                    A spokesperson for Cardiff Met told The Cardiff Tab a small number of cases have been identified there. There was previously a small outbreak of mumps at Cardiff Met in April.

                    Emails have been sent out to students at Cardiff Met, the University of South Wales and the Royal College of Welsh Music and Drama warning them to be aware of mumps symptoms. Cardiff University have put information about mumps on the student intranet...

                        A number of students fall ill each year with the virus, which can cause fever and painfully swollen glands, and in some cases fertility problems in men.
