A fresh outbreak of mumps has hit the North East with 169 reported cases in the last two weeks.

Figures from Public Health England (PHE) show there were 95 reports of the infectious disease in the week ending January 12, and 74 in the week ending January 5.

These were by far the highest numbers in England and a sharp rise from 30 reported cases in the last week of 2019. A PHE report showed there were 29 cases in the North East between July and September last year.

The area with the highest number of suspected sufferers was Newcastle, and recent increases have largely been driven by outbreaks in university students.

The breakdown of new cases for last week is Gateshead , 9; Newcastle , 28; North Tyneside , 7; South Tyneside , 14; Sunderland , 7; County Durham , 9; Northumberland , 18; Middlesbrough, 1 and Stockton on Tees, 2.

At the end of November last year, Newcastle University issued a warning that mumps "is circulating in students in parts of England including Newcastle, particularly among 15-25 year olds"....

Mumps hits decade high in England

Cases of mumps in England have reached a decade high, data shows.

The viral infection is defined by painful swelling in the side of the face under the ears, leading to a “hamster” appearance.

Most cases pass in a week or two with rest, fluids and painkillers.

Around one in seven sufferers, however, develop viral meningitis. Other complications include inflammation of the pancreas, testicles and ovaries.

Outbreaks in universities and colleges led to 5,042 mumps cases in 2019, four times as many as 2008.

One Leeds University student reportedly needed morphine to cope with the pain, while another told the BBC her jaw “pretty much locked”...
