    HSE issue message to schools in Louth regarding Mumps outbreak

    The HSE have written to schools across Louth and the Northeast about an outbreak of Mumps.

    In the communication, sent to local schools, the HSE explains the situation and the background to the outbreak.

    They also alert parents and guardians about what to look out for.

    "A large number of mumps infections have been notified recently among students in second level schools. The national immunisation schedule recommends that all children have 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, one at 12 months of age and a second at 4-5 years...

    Mumps Outbreak Prompts College Warning
    An email to staff and students advised all members of College to check that they have had two MMR vaccines.

    An outbreak of mumps across Dublin ? including cases in Trinity ? has prompted the College to warn students of the dangers of the disease and advise them to take precautions against it.

    In an email to staff and students, the Director of the College Health Service, Dr David McGrath, recommended that all members of College should ?check that they have had two MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) Vaccines and to make an appointment for vaccination either at College Health or with their own GP if they are not protected?.

    ?I would recommend that all students check their childhood vaccination history with their family GP?, he added.

    Attached to the email was a letter from Dr Mary Conlon, a Senior Medical Officer, which cautioned that all students may have been exposed to mumps as a result of the outbreak...

      84% increase in mumps cases reported to HPSC

      There has been an 84% increase in the number of cases of mumps reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre in recent weeks.

      Over the first five weeks of this year, the number of cases has increased to 231, compared to just 36 over the same period last year, an increase of 195.

      There were 50 cases of the highly infectious disease reported over the week ending Saturday, February 2.

      MMR uptake rates among children in Ireland remain below the target of 95% needed to prevent the spread of mumps, according to the HPSC.

      Last week, the HSE alerted Trinity College Dublin that there had been cases of mumps in the university and other students might have been exposed...

          Nearly 400 cases of mumps have been reported this year, HSE figures have shown.

          There were 64 new cases reported last week, bringing the total to 384 since the start of the year. The number of cases has been rising steadily in recent weeks, with 278 in the first six weeks of the year. Last year there had been 52 cases by the end of February. There were 576 cases in total last year...

            Politicians were put on official alert yesterday after a case of
            highly contagious mumps was discovered on the Dail campus.

            An emergency circular was issued to all Oireachtas offices from the HSE urging TDs or senators who never had the infection or the MMR vaccination to get the jab.

            Anyone working in Leinster House who has mumps are being warned to stay away from work for at least five days. The Houses of the Oireachtas issued a ?warn and inform? notice to all offices yesterday morning...

              Mumps cases continue to rise across Ireland

              There has been a large rise in the number of mumps cases reported to HPSC in the first nine weeks of 2019 compared to the same period last year. Most cases are in teenagers and young adults. In the first 9 weeks of 2019, 451 mumps cases were notified compared to 60 for the same time period in 2018. A total of 575 cases were notified in 2018.
              Mumps cases in 2019 to date
              • Age group distribution: most cases are in the 15-19 year age group (34%); 20-24 year age group (28%) and 10-14 year age group (11%)
              • The male: female ratio is 1.3:1
              • 20 cases were reported as hospitalised
              • Most cases have been reported in the East (142 cases), followed by the North East (102 cases), the West (72 cases), Northwest (55 cases), Midwest (39 cases) with smaller numbers in the Midlands (17 cases), South (13 cases), and South East (11 cases).
              • In 2019 to date, 10 mumps outbreaks have been reported in community, school, university, private home and other settings...

                  The HSE has reported a sharp rise in the number of cases of mumps following a major outbreak of the illness in the north-west.

                  A total of 18 cases of the contagious disease have been reported since Monday according to the Irish Independent.

                  This brings the total number of cases in the region to 93.

                  A spokesperson for the HSE says they have been mainly in the Sligo town area and south Donegal, but there are also some cases in north Donegal...

                              WARNINGS HAVE BEEN issued to university students in Dublin after the HSE confirmed that mumps cases have increased as students return to schools and colleges.

                              Earlier this month, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), Ireland’s specialist agency for the surveillance of communicable diseases, confirmed that the national mumps outbreak that started in 2018 is still ongoing...

                              ...In September, 69 cases were notified to HPSC compared to 56 notifications for the same time period in 2018. Nearly half of these notifications are from the HSE east region.

                              From the beginning of the year until the end of September, a total of 1,765 cases of mumps were identified in Ireland, compared to a total of 575 for 2018.

                              Most cases (58.5%) were in the 15-24 year age group.

                              Among those in the 15-24 year age group, school, university or social settings were reported as the most likely place where mumps cases were infected, according to the HPSC.
