    Mumps postpones men's basketball games

James Madison University has postponed its home basketball game against UNCW on Thursday, Feb. 8, and its away game against Elon on Saturday, Feb. 10. The games are being postponed due to confirmed cases of mumps affecting the team and due to concerns for potential exposure to opposing players. Within the JMU coaching staff, there is one confirmed case of mumps and one probable case in an individual who has since recovered. Two other individuals have been identified as suspected cases of mumps with no confirmed diagnosis at this time. At this point, there is one possible case affecting a student-athlete. Confirmatory testing has been initiated. As a precaution, all student-athletes and associated personnel related to both men?s and women?s JMU basketball programs have received MMR booster injections. There are no suspected cases among the general student population.

                Campus health notice

                by staff | April 26, 2018

Vice President for Student Affairs Ginger Ambler and Director of the Student Health Center Virginia Wells sent the following messages to the campus community. - Ed.

                April 26, 2018

                Dear W&M Community,

Earlier this week we informed you that the Peninsula Health District had identified a case of mumps at William & Mary. We have now learned that additional cases have been confirmed. As with the first, these additional students have been isolated and those known to have had contact with them have been notified.

Please review your immunization status and contact your doctor to receive vaccine as needed. MMR is usually given at age 12 months and again between the ages of 4 to 6 years. The mumps vaccine is 88% effective in persons having received two doses; therefore, some fully immunized individuals may still develop mumps.

Mumps is an acute viral disease that is transmitted from person to person through direct contact with respiratory droplets spread by coughing and sneezing, or through contact with saliva from an ill person, such as by sharing drinking cups, cigarettes, e-cigarettes or eating utensils. Persons with mumps may have body aches, fever, and swollen glands in the jaw. Most people recover from the illness in a week, but serious complications are possible.

We want to remind you that people who are exposed to mumps may not show symptoms for 12 to 25 days. Typically, infected individuals can transmit the infection to others two days before symptoms appear. If you develop mumps-like symptoms, first contact your doctor and self-isolate until your doctor directs otherwise (self-isolate means: no class, no work, no gym, no parties, no eating out, and no team practices). If you have questions about whether you are up-to-date with your mumps immunizations, please contact your physician.

The university has taken all appropriate and recommended steps, including sharing this information with the campus community. We will continue to provide additional updates or recommendations if needed. More information about mumps is available in the attached flyers and from Virginia Department of Health at http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/epidemio...-sheets/mumps/

                Sincerely,

                Virginia D. Wells, M.D.

Spike in mumps on college campuses 'sheds light' on vaccine's effectiveness

                  RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - ...

The reports of the virus prompted William & Mary to cancel a lacrosse match this weekend.
                  ...
"It kind of sheds light on the fact that the vaccine may not be as effective as we want it to be," said Marshall Vogt, the division epidemiologist at the Virginia Dept. of Health. "What we know about the mumps vaccine is that is about 88 percent effective after two doses."
                  ...
Health officials couldn't specify how many cases were at colleges, but the department is looking into 56 reported cases of the mumps this year. In 2017, there were 45 cases. Right now, the figures are preliminary for 2018 and 2017. In comparison, 17 cases were reported in 2016 and 34 in 2015.
                  ...
The Virginia Dept. of Health is keeping track of cases of the mumps popping up at another Virginia college campus, and are urging you to go to the doctor if you think you have it.

STAUNTON ? In 2018, mumps cases in Virginia have reached 157 cases.

That's triple the number than last year, which had 45 reported cases. In 2016, that number was even lower, with only 17 cases reported in the state.

"We?ve had a couple of large outbreaks at large universities," says Marshall Vogt, epidemiologist in the Virginia Dept. of Health Immunization Division. "Normally we don?t see the mumps because we have the MMR vaccines."
