    Cases of scarlet fever have soared to the highest levels in almost six decades as measles also continues to spiral, official statistics reveal.

    Public Health England figures show 26,745 people have been struck down by the 'Victorian' disease scarlet fever already this year, after 27 just weeks.

    In comparison, 19,206 people were struck down by scarlet fever across the whole of 2016 in England and Wales - the highest total since 1967.

    And with more than 20 weeks left to run, it is feared the total could snowball further and breach the more than 32,170 recorded in 1960...

      The scarlet fever is on the rise again this winter with 21 new reported in the Somerset and Bat area in the last fortnight.

      Four weeks ago, cases of scarlet fever started being reported again after a few months with no cases in the area.

      Last week numbers were the highest they have been in months.

      In the week ending on December 9, there were 14 cases reported. Six cases were in Mendip and one in South Somerset, as well as five in Bath and North East Somerset and two in North Somerset.

      The following week, ending on December 16, there were 5 cases in Somerset (one in Mendip, one in Sedgemoor and three in Taunton Deane), as well as two in Bath and North East Somerset.
