ORANGE ? Four students who attended Chapman Law School?s back-to-school event in late January have been diagnosed with mumps, and more could have been exposed to the virus, county health officials said Friday.

One case has been confirmed through testing and there are three probable cases, said Dr. Matthew Zahn, medical director of epidemiology and assessment at the Orange County Health Care Agency.

The three students who are probable were exposed as part of the same social group and are experiencing mumps symptoms, Zahn said.

The health agency has supplied vaccines to Chapman University. He said they will be administered through the campus clinic to students who were exposed.

Students were exposed to the virus Jan. 27 at Rudy?s Pub & Grill in Newport Beach, according to a Chapman University health alert issued Friday.

They are the first confirmed cases of mumps in San Joaquin County since 2011, according to the county's Public Health Services.

A student traveled to an out-of-state conference in mid-February and began developing symptoms in early March. Since late March, more students who were in close contact with that student developed symptoms of inflammation of the parotid gland, health officials said...

3 additional undergraduates diagnosed with the mumps

                  by Rebeccah Glaser

Three additional cases of the mumps have been identified in undergraduate students, said Associate Dean of Students DeAnn Yocum Gaffney, bringing the total number of cases at Chapman this year to 12.

The three cases are not new, Yocum Gaffney said, but rather are students that were tested for the mumps the week of April 3 and received negative results, but were later reclassified as probable mumps cases, which means that they matched the clinical definition of the disease.

Jessica Good, the Orange County Public Health information officer, wrote in an email to The Panther April 13 that there are zero suspected cases...

More than 40 people in Los Angeles County and surrounding regions have been diagnosed with mumps, prompting public health officials Thursday to declare an outbreak and issue an alert to physicians and providers to be aware of it.

In the alert, public health officials said many of the cases were initially misdiagnosed and there was a reliance of using false negative results. It?s unclear when this occurred. Health officials also did not release the conditions of those who were diagnosed. A response from Los Angeles County public health officials was not immediately forthcoming Thursday.

But health officials said most of the patients are men who have sex with men, and the majority of the cases were linked to patients being at large venues such as gyms, bars, theaters and nightclubs. Some of the patients are women and heterosexual men who have social connections to men who have sex with men, health officials noted.

?The majority of cases have had no documentation of complete vaccination; however, some cases were fully vaccinated,? according to the alert...
