Medicine Hat mumps outbreak prompts province-wide alert
Virus hit the WHL Tigers team, and it's expected there was widespread exposure
CBC News Posted: Feb 22, 2017 2:04 PM MT Last Updated: Feb 22, 2017 2:38 PM MT

It's likely just the beginning, as health officials in southern Alberta deal with a mumps outbreak in the Medicine Hat area.

"We called the mumps outbreak a week and a half ago in one area of southern Alberta, and at this point we have six lab-confirmed cases with multiple other lab samples awaiting testing," said Vivien Suttorp, lead medical officer of health for southern Alberta.

She said there was wide exposure to the disease through the local Western Hockey League team, the Tigers, and that steps have been taken to contain the spread, which could be province-wide.

"At this point, a lot of that strategy is there's targeted messaging to, for example, hockey teams that might have been exposed," said Suttorp...

Three cases of mumps confirmed in Calgary: AHS
      THE CANADIAN PRESS
By: Elizabeth Cameron For Metro Published on Mon Feb 27 2017

Calgary is not immune to the mumps, although there are two vaccines available to help.

The city has three confirmed cases of the viral infection so far this year, according to data from Alberta Heath Services (AHS).

In 2016, Calgary saw a total of 5 cases of the virus.

This year, a total of 17 cases have been confirmed in Alberta. The only area exempt ? so far ? is the North Zone.

Edmonton has already seen five cases this year, and a hockey team in Medicine Hat is experiencing their own cluster of cases...

Medicine Hat mumps outbreak spreads from Tigers hockey team to broader community
Health officer concerned outbreak could spread to less-immunized communities in AHS south zone
By Sarah Lawrynuik, CBC News Posted: Mar 13, 2017 2:29 PM MT Last Updated: Mar 13, 2017 2:50 PM MT

Medicine Hat, Alta., is currently seeing the second wave of a mumps outbreak in the city that seems to have originated from the local Western Hockey League team.

The number of confirmed cases has increased to 15, up from nine last week. While the original nine cases could all be linked back to the Medicine Hat Tigers, some of the new cases don't have any obvious connection.

"We've now seen that secondary spread to others, either to household members of confirmed cases, or even cases in the community with no direct link to the Western Hockey League," said Vivien Suttorp, the lead medical officer of health for AHS's south zone...

Twenty-four of Alberta's 51 confirmed cases are in Edmonton.

Last month, officials said four University of Alberta students had confirmed cases of the virus...

Alberta Health Services says two mumps outbreaks linked to four dozen cases of the infection in the south and Edmonton zones have been declared over.

The outbreaks in the south and Edmonton zones made up more than half the 75 cases of mumps in Alberta this year, up from eight cases in all of 2016.

The outbreaks began in February and March. In total, 48 cases were linked to the two outbreaks, AHS said in a statement on Monday...
