    A Belmont student is recovering after a mumps diagnosis as worst U.S. outbreak in a decade continues.

    NASHVILLE, TN ? Belmont University announced one of its students was diagnosed with mumps. The student received the diagnosis Thursday, was isolated and began treatment. The student is now recovering at home.

    Mumps Reported At Vanderbilt
    The university told staff and students that a "small number" of cases have been reported on campus.

    NASHVILLE, TN ? A "small number" of mumps cases have been diagnoses in the Vanderbilt University community, school officials advised staff and students via email Thursday.

    None of the diagnosed students are still or in isolation, but the university is warning there may be more cases in coming weeks...

      Four cases of mumps have been identified in Shelby County since March 2017, according to the Shelby County Health Department.

        Number of Shelby County mumps cases nearly triples

        After logging only two cases of mumps during a recent 10-year period, Shelby County health officials report that nearly a dozen residents have contracted the contagious viral disease since March.

        In the last six weeks alone, the number of mumps cases nearly tripled, from four to 11, said Health Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Hart. Statewide, there have been at least 39 people infected with mumps, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.

        Hart said the local cases might stem from an ongoing outbreak in neighboring Arkansas, where nearly 3,000 people have been infected. Given those cases, it "was not at all surprising that we crept up to 11," she said...
