      Dallas County Mumps Uptick Continues With Third Case in 2017

      Continuing a trend that began with 10 local cases last year, Dallas County Health and Human Services announced Thursday afternoon that Dallas County has been hit with its third case of mumps in 2017. Like each of the previous two cases this year, the mumps case announced Thursday was transmitted locally and isn?t connected to any other reported cases.

            Dallas County Health and Human Services announced Thursday that three cases of mumps have been diagnosed at a Dallas County high school, bringing the county's total number of diagnoses this year to seven.                 CEDAR HILL -- A mumps outbreak at Cedar Hill High School is under investigation.

                Dallas County Health and Human Services says 27 students and staff were diagnosed in the past three weeks. Six more cases are under investigation in Dallas and Mesquite.

                        Cedar Hill ISD Continues To Battle Mumps Outbreak

                        CEDAR HILL?This week Dallas County health officials announced another increase in the number of Mumps cases at Cedar Hill High School. According to DCHHS, since the initial outbreak on February 9, there have been 49 cases reported between students and teachers.

                        That is a drastic increase since the last reported update of 28 cases, as students prepared for the Spring Break holiday.

                        Cedar Hill Independent School District borders Ellis County as well, County Spokesperson Renae Crutchfield, did note not all cases are Dallas County residents.

                        To date, there have been 63 mumps cases in Dallas County. DCHHS has also identified 14 unrelated mumps cases in Mesquite, Dallas and neighboring DeSoto...

                            Texas Mumps Cases Hit 20-Year High

                            Mumps cases have hit a 20-year high in Texas and the highly contagious virus is infecting spring break travelers to popular beaches, state health officials said Wednesday.

                            The virus is rarely deadly but it can cause discomfort as salivary glands swell up. It can also cause deafness and, very rarely, dangerous encephalitis, or swelling of the brain.

                            The Department of State Health Services issued an advisory to doctors and clinics about the outbreak.

                            "State, regional and local health departments are currently investigating multiple outbreaks throughout the state, including one involving possible exposures on South Padre Island, a popular spring break destination for students from Texas and elsewhere in the United States," state health department said..

                            "Texas has had 221 mumps cases this year, the largest total since there were 234 cases in 1994." ...

                                On April 6, students, faculty and staff at Tarleton State University received an email informing the campus of a confirmed case of the mumps. On April 12, an additional email was sent to faculty that there were a few cases of students presenting with symptoms of the mumps.
