    DECEMBER 5, 2016 5:21 PM
Texas hasn?t had over 20 mumps cases since 2011. Now Johnson County has 28.

    BY RYAN OSBORNE
    rosborne@star-telegram.com

Officials have identified 28 cases of mumps in Johnson County, mostly in school-age children in Cleburne and Keene, said Dr. Elvin Adams.
    ...
?It?s really unusual,? said Adams, who works with the Texas Department of State Health Services. ?We?re having more than a year?s worth of cases in one community.?

Of the 28 cases, 19 are in Keene, eight in Cleburne and one in Alvarado. Children and youths ages 5 to 18 account for 23 of the cases, Adams said.

Adams said the virus is believed to have come from an outbreak in Arkansas, where several students from Keene had visited family about a month ago. Five people returned home with the virus, he said.

DALLAS - The health department is on alert after one of the worst mumps outbreaks in years.

In Dallas County, eight adults have been infected. Johnson County has had 48 mumps cases in just the past two weeks.

The illness itself is not severe, but can lead to other complications. Medical professionals say getting vaccinated is crucial to prevent it from spreading.

?In 1950, Texas as a whole had 33,000 cases of the mumps. Last year in 2015 we had 20 cases of mumps. That tells you that the vaccine is very effective,? said Dr. Christopher Perkins, the medical director of Dallas County Health and Human Services...
