Source: http://www.healthy.arkansas.gov/prog...ges/Mumps.aspx The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is investigating an outbreak of Mumps in Arkansas.
    CURRENT CASE COUNT:

The ADH will now report all suspected and lab confirmed cases of mumps as part of the total case count.

    Total Cases Under Investigation: 2,089*

*This is an active outbreak. Mumps case counts are provisional and include cases that are currently being investigated. Because this number is provisional, the numbers reported may occasionally decrease if lab tests are negative for mumps.

Throughout this outbreak, 90% to 95% of school-aged children and 30% to 40% of adults involved in the outbreak have been fully immunized. The vaccine is not perfect. Two doses of the MMR shot are about 88% effective at preventing the mumps. That means that if you have 100 people who are fully vaccinated, 88 of them will be fully protected. The remaining 12 will still be vulnerable to mumps. If it were not for the vaccine, however, we would be seeing many, many more cases of the mumps. Also, we have only seen a few cases with complications, like swelling of the brain or testicles. Normally, we would expect to see many more persons with complications. This tells us that even though some vaccinated individuals are still getting the mumps, they are experiencing mild disease. The vaccine remains the best protection we have against the mumps.

              Mumps hitting state's Marshallese hard
Islanders account for 60% of Arkansas? 2,220 cases; doctors looking for reason

The breadth of the outbreak of mumps in Northwest Arkansas appears to be linked in part to that area's community of Marshall Islanders, the director of the state Department of Health said Monday.

Meanwhile, the region's high rate of unvaccinated schoolchildren compared with the rest of the state doesn't appear to be a factor in the unusual size of the outbreak, said Nate Smith, director of the state Department of Health.

Despite making up a small fraction of the region's total population, Marshall Islanders account for about 60 percent of the 2,220 people who had been infected as of Friday in the outbreak that started in August, according to figures Smith presented to the state House and Senate's committees on public health, welfare and labor during a joint meeting on Monday.

By contrast, only 82 of the 1,324 school-age children who have been infected with the mumps had less than the recommended two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

The 2,220 cases that have been reported in Arkansas account for more than half of the 4,258 cases that have been reported nationwide so far this year, Smith said.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, Arkansas' outbreak is the largest since 2009 and 2010, when an outbreak in New York City affected about 3,000 people, most of them students of high school age...

Mumps Outbreak May Be Slowing In Northwest Arkansas
By Associated Press ? 20 hours ago

Arkansas officials say the number of mumps cases in the northwest part of the state appears to be leveling off.

The Arkansas Department of Health says there were 2,400 confirmed or strongly suspected cases as of Jan. 5. State epidemiologist Dr. Dirk Haselow says there are about 10 new cases of mumps per day. According to Haselow, health officials were seeing 40 or 50 new cases a day at the height of the outbreak...

The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is investigating an outbreak of Mumps in Arkansas.
                                CURRENT CASE COUNT:

The ADH will now report all suspected and lab confirmed cases of mumps as part of the total case count.

                                Total Cases Under Investigation: 2,535*
