    Whooping cough outbreak hits two local schools

    Eight students in two Forsyth County schools have come down with whooping cough.

    The highly-contagious respiratory infection, also known as pertussis, has been confirmed in seven students at Piney Grove Elementary School and one student attending Mount Tabor High School and the Career Center.

    Caren Jenkins, supervisor for the school health program in Forsyth County, said Forsyth last saw a large-scale outbreak of pertussis in 2013 when nearly 150 cases were identified. Jenkins said she didn?t know how many cases have been identified so far in 2016, but that 2013 was the last time such a large number of cases were identified in a concentrated group like this...
