  • Netherlands: Measles outbreak reaches 2,016 cases, 121 hospitalisations, 1 death

Measles outbreak reaches 161 cases, five children hospitalised

    Monday 01 July 2013

The number of reported cases of measles in the Bible Belt region has gone up to 161 and five children have been hospitalised, the public health institute RIVM said on Monday.

The true number of cases is likely to be higher because not all patients will see their family doctor, the RIVM said.

The outbreak is largely affecting children aged four to 12 who attend orthodox Protestant schools. Many of the country's strict Protestant communities do not vaccinate their children on religious grounds.

    Exceptional

Two of the hospitalised children have developed pneumonia; two others have meningitis. 'These are exceptional cases,' the RIVM told the Telegraaf. 'The most common symptom is otitis.

The symptoms of the fifth child have not been released.

The outbreak began in May with 54 reported cases in the past ten days.

Number of cases in Dutch measles outbreak rises to 230

Number of measles cases rise to 230

    Thursday 04 July 2013

The number of cases of measles in the Dutch Bible belt has gone up around 40% to 230 over the past week, the public health institute RIVM said on Thursday.

A further two people have been hospitalised, taking the total to six children and one adult. The epidemic has also spread to three more primary schools and one secondary school, the RIVM said.

Fundamentalist Protestants in the Netherlands do not believe in having their children vaccinated. The measles vaccine is given to most children in the BMR combination injection at the age of 14 months and again at nine years.

The total number of cases may be far higher because not everyone will have visited their doctor, the RIVM said. Measles is spread by coughing and sneezing.

Dutch health care service offers anonymous vaccinations for religious parents

      English.news.cn 2013-07-05

THE HAGUE, July 5 (Xinhua) - Dutch regional health centers (GGD) offer anonymous vaccinations against the measles epidemic to parents, who are against vaccinations for their babies out of religious considerations, GGD doctor Frits Woonink told local media Friday.

In a letter to the parents the GGD has offered to pay them a visit instead of letting the children come to the regional health centers. According to Woonink this method is quite effective, although "the number of children being vaccinated now has not significantly increased," Woonink said.

Since late May, a measles epidemic has broken out in the so-called Dutch "Bible Belt," a strip of land mainly inhabited by conservative reformed Christians.

Local outbreak of the measles, an infection of the respiratory system, was reported around reformatory schools in the Land of Heusden and Altena region, the Bommelerwaard and the Alblasserwaard. In addition, patients were reported in the provinces of Zeeland, Utrecht and the rural area in the Randstad.

Most Dutch people are vaccinated against measles through the national vaccination program, which was introduced in 1976 to protect all children at the age of 14 months and at the age of 9 years against measles. However, some people living in the Bible Belt choose not be vaccinated against diseases out of religious considerations.

"There is a phrase in the Bible which says intervening is against the will of god," Roel Coutinho, director of the RIVM Centre for Infectious Disease Control, earlier told Xinhua.

"Therefore, people choose to let themselves and their children not be vaccinated. We are talking about several thousands of unvaccinated children currently at risk of getting measles," Coutinho said.

Minister of Health Edith Schippers told local media last week that she finds it " irresponsible" that parents don't let their children get vaccinated against measles.

She encouraged parents to reconsider their decision, but added that people "cannot be forced, because we live in a free country."

In addition, Schippers decided last week that at least 10.000 babies in the Dutch regions where the measles epidemic has broken out could get vaccinated before they reach 14 months.

So far, more than 230 patients with measles have been reported. The actual number is probably much higher because not all patients have attended the doctor.

Measles infections reach 466 in Netherlands

The number of confirmed cases of measles outbreak in the Bible belt of the Netherlands has reached 466, according to the public health institute RIVM. The new cases are all in areas where a large number of children have not been vaccinated, as many orthodox Protestants shun vaccinations on religious grounds, the RIVM said Thursday. Over 3,000 people were infected, 150 children were hospitalized and three died during the last major measles outbreak between 1999 and 2000.

        Measles infections near 500

The number of confirmed cases of measles in the Bible belt outbreak has reached 466, the public health institute RIVM said on Thursday.

The RIVM said there was no cause for concern and the new cases are all in areas where a large number of children have not been vaccinated. Many orthodox Protestants shun vaccinations on religious grounds.

During the last major measles outbreak between 1999 and 2000, over 3,000 people were infected, 150 children were hospitalised and three died.

Another 6 hospitalised this week, mostly with pneumonia.

Measles outbreak widens, reaches 600 cases

A further 147 cases of measles were reported last week, bringing the total to 613, the public health institute RIVM said on Thursday.

The outbreak, which began in May, has also spread to four new local authority health services, including Utrecht and The Hague.

Among the new cases are two healthcare workers who probably contracted the disease during their work. Several hospitals in the affected regions and with low take-up of vaccination are now taking preventative measures.
The RIVM expects a falling-off of cases during the summer holiday and for the outbreak to reach its peak after the summer.

          Bible Belt

Most of the cases are in the Bible Belt region where staunchly Protestant communities do not vaccinate their children on religious grounds.
Last week, prime minister was criticised by ministers in the orthodox Dutch Protestant church for saying: 'God never meant these children to suffer because He also ensured their are vaccines.'

Re: Netherlands: Measles outbreak reaches 921 cases, 58 hospitalised

Measles cases near 1,000, 21 children hospitalised

            Thursday 08 August 2013

The number of confirmed cases of measles in the Dutch Bible belt outbreak has reached 921, the public health institute RIVM said on Thursday.

This is an increase of 141 on a week ago. In addition, a further 21 children have been hospitalised, the RIVM said.

However, the total is a ?major underestimate? of the real number of cases because most people do not report their illness to family doctors, the organisation said in its latest update.

Most of those infected are children aged four to 12 who come from families which refuse vaccinations on religious grounds.

The RIVM expects the epidemic to continue until the autumn and to be of the same proportions as the last outbreak in 1999-2000, when 3,000 cases were reported.

              Rise in measles infections slows

              Thursday 29 August 2013

The number of people diagnosed with measles in the current Bible belt epidemic rose by 64 to 1,226 this week, says the public health institute RIVM.

The institute had expected a sharper rise once schools reopened after the summer break. However, it is too soon to say if the epidemic is over the worst, the RIVM said.

                Sept. 10, 2013

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A measles outbreak in the Netherlands has sickened nearly 1,300 people since May, a report shows.

Of the 1,266 cases, 82, or 6.5 percent, required the patient to be hospitalized, Forbes magazine reported Tuesday.

Nearly all of the patients, 96.5 percent, had not been vaccinated and another 3.2 percent had only received partial vaccinations, the magazine said.

Netherlands - A 17-year-old girl died after measles infection. She was not vaccinated. This was confirmed by RIVM (Dutch CDC).

It is the first fatal victim of the measles epidemic the Netherlands which started in May.

The total number of confirmed measles patients is 2,016, but the actual number is probably much higher. According to the RIVM many patients do not go to the GP.

The outbreak of the disease, which is particularly prevalent among children between 4 and 12, has especially hit the Bible Belt. There are many people who refuse vaccination for religious reasons.
