    Health chief: whooping cough rise ?a concern?

    A SPATE of whooping cough cases in Calderdale has been labelled a ?concern? by health chiefs.

    The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported 22 cases of the highly-infectious disease among children and adults in Calderdale in the past six months ? more than half of those cases coming in the past 28 days.

    Nine cases have been laboratory-confirmed, four are probable and nine are possible cases of infection...

    Cases of whooping cough in England and Wales have more than doubled in the past year, says the Health Protection Agency.

    HPA figures showed cases increased from 421 in 2010 to 1,040 in 2011, which is around the level reached in 2008.

    The rise was seen mainly in teenagers and adults aged 15 to 40, although the illness can affect all ages...

        Increase in whooping cough cases in north west

        CASES of whooping cough in the north west have seen a sharp increase during the past 12 months.

        The number of infections reported to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has risen from 65 in 2010 to 107 in 2011.

        The figures reflect a national upward trend in levels of the illness, which more than doubled from 421 cases last year to 1040 in 2011, according to figures published last week...
