    Chikungunya cases increase 331% in July compared to 2020 in Paraíba
    Paraíba registered 6,982 probable cases of dengue, 4,413 of chikungunya and 718 of the acute illness caused by the Zika virus.

    The epidemiological bulletin of arboviruses from January to July 24, 2021, in Paraíba, registered 6,982 probable cases of dengue, 4,413 of chikungunya and 718 of the acute disease caused by the Zika virus. There was a significant increase over the same period last year, according to the State Department of Health (SES), through the Executive Management of Health Surveillance.

    In this month of July alone, there were 2,300 new probable cases of dengue, 1,700 of chikungunya and a 100% increase in Zika cases, compared to the previous bulletin. If compared to the same period in 2020, there was a 53% increase in dengue notifications; 331% of chikungunya, and for probable cases of Zika, there was an increase of 239%.

    There were eight records of deaths suspected by arboviruses, in the municipalities of Conde (1), João Pessoa (5), Sapé (1), and Patos (1), with four discarded and two confirmed for dengue, in João Pessoa and Patos. Two are still under investigation. In the same period of 2020, there was one death confirmed by dengue, in Sapé, and two confirmed cases by chikungunya, in João Pessoa.

    In 2021, 14 confirmed cases of Zika virus were reported in pregnant women, by laboratory criteria, in the municipalities of Baraúna (1), Cabedelo (1), Campina Grande (1), Itapororoca (2), João Pessoa (4), Natuba ( 1), Pedras de Fogo (1), Picuí (1), Queimadas (1) and São Vicente do Seridó (1).

    By the end of the bulletin, 209 municipalities carried out the Rapid Index Survey for Aedes aegypti (LIRAa). According to the results sent, 73 (34.92%) presented indices that demonstrate a risk situation for the occurrence of an outbreak; 107 (51.19%) are in an alert situation and 29 (13.87%) municipalities are in a satisfactory situation. 10 municipalities (4.78%) had zero levels of the Building Infestation Index (IIP)....

    Chikungunya in Brazil: Cases up 32% in 2021

    According to the latest data published by the Pan American Health Organization , cases of chikungunya increased by 32% in Brazil in comparison between 2020 and 2021.

    Through November 27 of this year, 127,487 total cases of the disease, caused by a virus and transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, had been registered. This compares with 96,044 reported during the same period in 2020.

    The Northeast region continues to be the most affected, with an incidence of 111.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. But the increase of affected people in other parts of the country is also noteworthy, such as the Southeast, which reported 29.1 cases per 100,000 individuals.

    In São Paulo alone, the number of people affected by chikungunya jumped from 281 in 2020 to 18.2 thousand in 2021, which represents an increase of more than 6,000%...
