2,800 staff and police trainees quarantined after outbreak of flu-like virus

KUALA LUMPUR (March 9, 2011): Some 2,800 trainees and staff are under quarantine at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) following an outbreak of a flu-like virus which has claimed one life. A 25-year-old trainee police constable died on Tuesday.
It is learnt that the dead trainee, who was from Kuala Kangsar, had exhibited flu-like symptoms for two weeks but had sought treatment only on March 4. He was warded at the intensive care unit the next day. However, his condition deteriorated and he died late on Tuesday.
Another 28 trainees at Pulapol have also been infected with the flu-like virus identified as ?Adenovirus? and the *figure is rising. Two of them are in critical condition in the ICU at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said in a statement today that as at 8.30pm on Tuesday, 210 police trainees were diagnosed with influenza- like illnesses (ILI).
He said laboratory test results of throat swabs from 18 of the 20 trainees (90%) and three of four stool samples taken from those who had been isolated indicated that they had been infected by the Adenovirus.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said all training at Pulapol had been temporarily *suspended pending the all-clear from the Health Ministry.
He said efforts to contain the *pandemic at the training centre were being carried out stringently by the police and relevant authorities.
All 1,945 trainee constables and inspectors and 854 Pulapol staff had been ordered to remain within the centre and 226 trainees who had been in direct contact with those affected by the *Adenovirus had been isolated, he said.
He said an operations room had been set up to manage enquiries from the families of the trainees and those wishing to check on the health conditions of the trainees could contact 03-26882009.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police training centre in Jalan Semarak have been placed under red alert after a "adenovirus" infection claimed the life of a 21-year-old trainee police constable.
Nearly 3,000 police personnel have been quarantined at the training centre after the trainee constable from Kuala Kangsar died at 10am this morning at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital after being warded for a week.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, said 30 more trainee policemen are now placed in isolation wards with two of them currently warded in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
He said the police are working closely with the Health Ministry in combating the crisis.
"We are checking to find out the cause and source of the outbreak. I want to assure everyone, especially the families of the trainees, that we are taking all necessary measures to control the situation," the IGP told newsmen at the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman this afternoon...Tags: None
