Kenyan woman dies from suspected Ebola-like symptoms
      English.news.cn 2011-12-22 19:08:46

NAIROBI, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's largest referral hospital was out on high alert on Thursday after a woman died from Ebola- like symptoms on arrival at the hospital where she had been rushed for treatment.

Doctors at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) said the 29-old Gladys Muthoni who was bleeding profusely died on arrival at the hospital at around 10 a.m. local time (0700GMT) after being dropped by a taxi driver.

"The woman was brought in a taxi and was accompanied by three people whom we have since isolated," Dr Masika Wafula, a Consultant on Infectious diseases told journalists at the hospital.

Wafula said the deceased who was working at a hotel in Nairobi, was bleeding heavily from nose, ears and mouth and died even before she could be taken out of the car.

"We need to be very cautious and that is why we have isolated the three people who had accompanied her to the hospital including the deceased's father, a friend and the taxi driver," Wafula said.

Ebola which is characterized by high fever, muscle pain and massive haemorrhaging spreads rapidly and can kill within 24 hours.

Wafula who declined if the case is Ebola said the doctors from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), America's Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Ministry of Health surveillance team have been called to carry out specialized tests to establish the cause of death and know what kind of treatment to administer to those under isolation.

Kenya's health officials at the entry points have been on high alert following an outbreak of the deadly Ebola disease in neighboring Uganda mid this year.

People crossing the border to Kenya from Uganda are now required to be thoroughly screened to curb a spread of the deadly disease, officials said.

Wafula said they had not confirmed if the woman died of Ebola but he warned that the symptoms she displayed before she died are not of a normal disease.

"From her symptoms, this is not a common disease, we are taking all precautions and the necessary tests are being carried out by doctors," he added.

Re: Woman dies of mystery virus in Nairobi - Ebola suspected

There has only been one confirmed Ebola case anywhere in the world since January 1, 2009:

and confirmed Ebola has never been reported from Kenya (and I don't see any evidence for travel in the articles, although her occupation could bring her in contact with a traveler).

Kenya has reported yellow fever and Rift Valley fever in the past, which would also give a hemorrhagic presentation.

Fever is also not mentioned as a symptom; if fever is not a symptom, there are a wide variety of non-infectious causes of a fatal hemorrhagic illness. Nothing in any of the articles requires a viral cause.

More cases could be expected if it is communicable.

The bold, underlined text strongly argues against an infectious cause, as hemorragic fevers typically produce an illness lasting several days.

Doctor J. Masika Wafula says she had been bleeding from her mouth, nose and ears - characteristic symptoms of the Ebola virus, or hemorrhagic fever.

"Basically this is someone who works in a hotel and was perfectly okay until roughly this morning when she suddenly developed bleeding from various parts of the body," said Wafula. "And this was an extensive bleed, and we believe this is the reason why she died."

Health probe as Ebola scare woman dies

                  snip

Dr Wafula declined to speculate the cause of the death, saying the bleeding could have been as a result of multiple conditions.

The woman’s father, her friend and a taxi driver were first quarantined at the tents usually used for blood donation for several hours.

Their car was also detained. They were later moved to a ward where they will be kept in isolation until doctors determine the cause of Muthoni’s death.

Experts from the Ministry of Public Health, Division of Disease Surveillance and Response are reported to have taken over the investigation.

Muthoni, 29, was said to have been in good health when she reported to work yesterday morning at the Timboroa Hotel in downtown Nairobi.

“She even went to the market and was going about her duties at work when she started bleeding
,” said Ms Rachel Wairimu, a sister.

“When it increased, the manager called our father who went to pick her up.”

Dr Ashford Parantai, who was among the experts who received the body at the hospital, said incubation period for haemorrhagic fever is 18-48 hours. [This is FALSE. The incubation period for Ebola is 2-21 days. - alert]

“The disease is spread by coming into contact with an infected person or body secretions,” Dr Parantai said.

                    Ebola fear strikes Kenya

                    snip

"We know she died of heavy bleeding. But we are yet to establish the cause of the bleeding," explained Dr Wafula, a consultant physician at KNH in the evening.

Wafula sought to downplay fears of a possible Ebola outbreak and insisted it is "very unlikely" that the woman died of Ebola.

Experts will also be working overtime to unravel the possible cause of the infection, with initial reports suggesting she may have come into contact with an infected person.

The Ebola virus has also largely been associated with Uganda.

Experts say full-blown symptoms, including bleeding often develops just two days after picking up the virus. Tests will also be carried out on the car that carried her and which is now in the hand of the experts.

"We have put the three people under close observations to see if they develop any symptoms similar to the deceased’s," added Wafula

The suspected Ebola victim lived alone in Nairobi’s Dandora Estate. She was single and had no children. "I saw Gladys on Wednesday evening. She looked okay. I was shocked to hear she died this morning," said Naftali Macharia, her uncle.

She had been working with the city hotel for the last six months, and didn’t look sick for the last few days, relatives said.

                    Extra precautions

The doctor who initially examined her thought the bleeding was due to an accident and may not have taken extra precautions like wearing gloves and mask when examining her.

                    snip

One employee, however, claimed Muthoni had been diagnosed with tuberculosis, but this does not explain the bleeding.

According to her, Gladys reported as usual for duty and worked overnight on Wednesday. "Gladys was well until she took the drugs that she was carrying in her bag. That is when her condition worsened," explained the employee.

                        [snip]

Workmates say blood oozed from all her openings including eyes, ears and mouth, leaving her supervisor, fellow workers and patrons in shock.

Before she was rushed to hospital, Muthoni had mingled with many people at the busy hotel along Sheikh Nkrumah Road in Nairobi, where she reported for work on Wednesday night.

She also went to the market to buy supplies for the hotel, where her colleagues said she was suddenly hit by heavy bleeding, before she collapsed.

Several medical specialists at KNH led by Dr Masika Wafula doused both the bloodstained car that carried the disease and from which the body had not been removed five hours later with disinfectants.

Those who brought her were quarantined to be tested and to prevent spread of the virus if it turned out to be killer Ebola.

She was bleeding heavily from parts of her body and she died even before she could be taken out of the car," Dr Masika Wafula, a Consultant on Infectious diseases told reporters at the hospital.
Dr Wafula said they had not authoritatively confirmed if she died of Ebola but he warned that the symptoms she displayed before she died are not of a normal disease.
"From her symptoms, this is not a common disease, we are taking all precautions and the necessary tests are being carried out," he added, declining to confirm it is Ebola.
A spokesman for the Kenyatta National Hospital Simon Ithai told reporters that a team of medical personnel had been dispatched to the hotel where the woman worked and at her home for further analysis.
Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) is a viral haemorrhagic fever and one of the most virulent viral diseases known to humankind.
There is no known treatment or vaccine for Ebola, which is transmitted through close personal contact.
It kills up to 90 percent of victims.
Its initial symptoms include persistent fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat which is usually followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rashes on the body as well as external bleeding.
In May this year, the Ebola virus killed a 12-year-old girl in Uganda prompting the Health Ministry in Kenya to issue an alert on people living at the border

The body of the woman was still lying in the taxi which ferried her to the hospital as medics prepared to carry out the tests. The vehicle was being guarded by security personnel to keep away a crowd which surged to have a glimpse of the body.
Capital News has learnt that the deceased woman was working at a hotel in downtown Nairobi.http://allafrica.com/stories/201112221008.html
