Bird Flu Kills Four Women in Egypt as Death Toll Rises to 19

      By Abeer Allam
<!-- WARNING: #foreach: $wnstory.ATTS: null at /bb/data/web/templates/webmacro_en/20601202.wm:289.2 --><!-- WARNING: #foreach: $wnstory.ATTS: null at /bb/data/web/templates/webmacro_en/20601202.wm:303.19 -->Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Bird flu killed four Egyptian women in a week as cooler weather helped spread the disease in villages of the Middle East's most-populous nation, the government said.
The deadly strain of avian influenza killed a 25-year-old woman from the southern province of Beni Suef on Dec. 25 and another 25-year-old from the Nile Delta province of Daqahliya on Dec. 30, Hamdi Mahmoud, a spokesman for the Health Ministry, said. A 36-year-old woman from the northern province of Menoufia and a 50-year-old from the Mediterranean province of Damietta both died on Dec. 31, he said.
``They all denied they had poultry at home when they were first admitted to hospitals,'' Mahmoud said in a telephone interview from Cairo today. ``This is the main problem we are facing. People are afraid to say they have poultry at home and this delays treatment.''
The H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed 19 people in Egypt, the hardest-hit country outside Asia. As many as 5 million Egyptian households raise chickens in their backyards for food or extra income. The government banned raising poultry in rural and urban homes when the disease first broke in February 2005. The ban was later lifted on rural areas.
Most of the 43 Egyptians who have been infected with avian influenza were women or girls handling household poultry. Before last week, the previous bird flu fatality in Egypt took place in June as the hot summer abated the spread of the virus among fowl and humans, the Health Ministry said.
``We told people to stop raising poultry where they live, especially in winter, but no one is listening,'' he said.
Bird flu is known to have infected 346 people in 14 countries since 2003, killing 213 of them as of December 28, according to the World Health Organization.

Two Suspect H5N1 Familial Clusters in Sharquia Egypt

                                Recombinomics Commentary 11:31
                                January 2, 2008

AIn Sharkia in the eastern Nile Delta, health officials quarantined four citizens for suspected symptoms of bird flu in Sharkia Contagious Disease Hospital.

They were identified as 3-year-old Menah Mohamed Fathi, her grandmother, 55-year-old Samia el-Sayed Awad, and 25-year-old Iman Sobhi and her son, Mohamed Maher Reda.

This came as the health and population ministry declared a maximum state of emergency following the death of three new victims in less than 30 hours.

The above translation describes the hospitalization of four suspect bird flu cases, representing two familial clusters in Sharquia. These suspect familial clusters are in addition to the four person cluster in Port Said and the two member cluster in Menoufia. At least two more suspect patients were hospitalized in Qualubiya, where a health care worker is also hospitalized (see satellite map).

Although Egypt has had many suspect H5N1 cases in the past, the cases usually peak in late winter / early spring. As noted above, the recent confirmed fatalities and declaration of a maximum state of emergency may have contributed to the number of hospitalized suspect cases. However, the number of H5N1 outbreaks in domestic poultry farms and backyard holdings is exploding, with 25 new outbreaks recently announced.

In addition, one of the recent suspect patients has died (43M) as has one of the suspect patients (26F), who was subsequently confirmed H5N1 positive.

Updated lab data on the hospitalized patients, and sequence data from the confirmed patients would be useful.
