11/12/12 – Confirmed H5N1 infection in a human, Damietta (National authorities)
H5N1 infection was reported in a two-year old female from Kafr Saad District, Damietta Governorate. She developed symptoms on 3 December 2012; samples submitted tested positive for H5N1 by RT-PCR. Investigations into the source of infection revealed that there was close contact with sick backyard chickens and ducks, which died a week before the appearance of symptoms in the patient. A detailed investigation and joint work are ongoing at the district level.
