Security Message for U.S. Citizens No. 72: Weekend Security Update

    August 22, 2013

The U.S. Embassy has received reports that there will be protest activity by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood following Friday prayers on August 23. Protests will likely begin by mid-afternoon. While the areas of gatherings have not been publicized, common assembly points have included Giza (Dokki and Mohandiseen) and Maadi (behind the Maadi Club) locations. Security Forces, under emergency law may move to prevent these gatherings and, as seen previously, local residents may confront these groups as well. There are also reports that a revolutionary group may hold demonstrations at foreign embassies today (Thursday, August 22).

Due to the possibility of violence on Friday, the U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to remain at or in very close proximity of their residences beginning at 1:00 p.m. Please continue to closely monitor local media for any updates to the security situation. Though the past several days have been relatively calm in Cairo and Alexandria, the security situation remains tense and unpredictable, with sporadic reports of confrontations and violence. The U.S. Embassy does not currently prohibit its personnel from traveling to Red Sea resorts that can be reached by flights, but recommends citizens limit overland travel due to violence reported in many other parts of the country.

The curfew remains in effect from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and the Embassy strongly encourages U.S. citizens to abide by the curfew. Should an emergency situation place you out after curfew, be prepared to encounter checkpoints and diversions. Remain calm and abide by instructions of the police or military. Pay close attention to any hand signals and do not make any sudden moves or try to avoid a checkpoint. Be prepared to present identification.

The possibility of protests in vicinity of the Embassy continues. Please do not travel to the Embassy unless you receive specific instructions from the Embassy to do so.

As a matter of general practice, U.S. citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens in Egypt are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.
