OFFICIAL WARNING: Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises against all travel to Egypt due to demonstrations and protests, civil unrest, high levels of criminal activity and violence throughout the country, and the threat of terrorist attacks.

Civil unrest and violent demonstrations have been occurring in many parts of Egypt since January 23, 2011. There are reports of large scale arrests, property damage including looting and arson, injuries, and deaths from injuries sustained during the protests. Internet service has been unavailable since January 28 and other telecommunication services may be disrupted. A nationwide curfew (from 3 p.m. to 8 a.m.) has been imposed. Access to some areas may be restricted due to increased security measures and military presence on the streets. The border with the Gaza Strip is closed.

    Evacuation

Canadians already in Egypt should consider leaving if their presence is not necessary. They may wish to ask family or friends outside of Egypt to help with online travel arrangements, such as securing plane tickets, as local travel service providers may be limited in their capability to do so. Those seeking Canadian chartered transportation should contact the Canadian embassy in Cairo or the Emergency Operations Centre in Ottawa (see Section 5). Access to Cairo's international airport may be difficult due to severe traffic disruptions.

Canadians choosing to travel to Egypt despite this warning are strongly encouraged to register their travel details on the Registration of Canadians Abroad database. Travellers should carefully evaluate the implications for their security and safety, avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings, monitor local news reports, follow the advice of local authorities and keep a supply of basic foods on hand. Canadians requiring emergency assistance may contact the Embassy of Canada in Cairo.

Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in Egypt should contact the Emergency Operations Centre at 1-800-606-5499 or 1-800-387-3124.

Our Crisis page contains more information on the situation in Egypt and the Canadian government's evacuation plans.

OFFICIAL REGISTRATION RECOMMENDATION: We offer a registration service for all Canadians travelling or living abroad. This service is provided so that we can contact and assist you in an emergency abroad, such as a natural disaster or civil unrest, or inform you of a family emergency at home. Registration can be done on-line or by contacting a Canadian government office abroad. For more information, see our FAQs on Registration of Canadians Abroad.

?We are closely monitoring the developments in Egypt. While we hope for an early and peaceful resolution of the situation without further violence and loss of life, the situation is very volatile and we recommend that Canadians leave Egypt. So far, we have had no reports of Canadians having been injured or killed.

?The number of Canadians registered with us is now 1,365, up from 1,131 yesterday.

?We urge Canadians to avoid travelling to Egypt due to demonstrations and protests, civil unrest, high levels of criminal activity and violence throughout the country, and the threat of terrorist attacks.
