    WHO: EBOLA RESPONSE ROADMAP UPDATE
    22 September 2014
    ...
Exposure of health-care workers (HCWs) to EVD continues to be an alarming feature of this outbreak. As of 22 September 2014, 348 HCWs are known to have developed EVD (67 in Guinea, 174 in Liberia, 11 in Nigeria, and 96 in Sierra Leone). 186 HCWs have died as a result of EVD infection (35 in Guinea, 85 in Liberia, 5 in Nigeria, and 61 in Sierra Leone).

    HEALTH-CARE WORKERS
A recent retrospective investigation of EVD cases from throughout the course of the outbreak in
Sierra Leone indicated that the number of health-care workers (HCWs) infected was higher than
    previously reported.

When the results of the investigation were incorporated into official national data, the number of
cases and deaths recorded among HCWs in Sierra Leone jumped sharply, from 74 cases and 31
deaths reported by WHO on 18 September to 96 cases and 61 deaths reported by WHO on 22
September. In the present report, there is a further jump to 113 cases and 81 deaths amongst HCWs
in Sierra Leone (table 2). This sharp increase again reflects the integration of the results of the
retrospective investigation into the official national data. It is important to emphasize that the additional HCW infections and deaths occurred throughout the course of the outbreak. Any cases of
EVD in HCWs are of great concern, but there is currently no evidence to suggest a recent increase in
the incidence of infections of HCWs.

Wow - about 5% of cases confirmed are HCW - that is a staggering percentage.

WHO has conducted a review of personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines for HCWs providing direct care to
patients, and has updated its guidelines in the context of the current Ebola outbreak. Comprehensive mandatory
training in the use of PPE, and mentoring for all users before engaging in clinical care, is considered fundamental
for the protection of HCWs and patients.

WHO has moved more than 1 million sets of PPE to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and continues to work with
ministries of health and other partners to procure and distribute PPE where it is most needed.
