  • Hurricane Delta now Category 2 - now has hit landfall

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Delta rapidly intensified into a dangerous Category 4 storm with 145 mph (230 kph) winds Tuesday while following a course to hammer southeastern Mexico and then continue on to the U.S. Gulf Coast later in the week.

The worst of the immediate impact was expected along the resort-studded northeastern tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where hurricane conditions were expected Tuesday night and landfall early Wednesday.

... “While there is large uncertainty in the track and intensity forecasts, there is a significant risk of dangerous storm surge, wind, and rainfall hazards along the coast from Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle beginning Thursday night or Friday. Residents in these areas should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and monitor updates to the forecast of Delta,” the Hurricane Center said.

At Louisiana 'mega' storm shelter, pandemic worries limit admissions

                      OCTOBER 9, 2020 3:58 PM UPDATED 3 HOURS AGO

                      By Stephanie Kelly

BATON ROUGE, La. (Reuters) - An emergency storm shelter for Louisiana residents fleeing Hurricane Delta was closed to newcomers on Friday as officials limited capacity over worries about the spread of coronavirus.

The state’s mega shelter, which can hold up to 2,000 people, has reached its pandemic limit of 833 evacuees, Governor John Bel Edwards said. It was a reminder of the dual crises facing the state, which reported an average of 734 new COVID-19 cases per day over the past week.

I'm afraid that people with pets are having a harder time finding shelter due to coronavirus fears. It sounded that way in the fires out west. All that progress made since Katrina could be lost.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — The day after Hurricane Delta blew through besieged southern Louisiana, residents started the routine again: dodging overturned cars, trudging through knee-deep water to flooded homes with ruined floors and no power, and pledging to rebuild after the storm.
                      ...
The U.S. Gulf Coast is no stranger to hurricanes, and its people are resilient, Lake Charles resident Katie Prejean McGrady said. But the double punch of the back-to-back storms — on top of the pandemic — has left many in the community reeling, she said.

“I’m taxed out. And I think that’s most people in town,” she said. “There’s a mental exhaustion that sets in and then there’s a fear of ‘Does anybody outside this region care?’” she said. “The reality is our town won’t be the same for a year, if not longer.”..
I've seen this same exhaustion in victims of the endless fires plaguing the west.
