Police closed the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in both directions at 3:23 p.m. due to heavy winds and rain.
The thunderstorm, which was close to the south shore at the time of the closure, was moving north, causing low visibility and difficult driving conditions, authorities said. Also, the wind speed in the storm was 45 to 50 mph, according to police.

There was no word on when the bridge would reopen.

Police reopened the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in both directions after a 34-minute closure due to heavy winds and rain. Full restrictions, however, remained in place, meaning motorcycles, trucks carrying glass or 18-wheelers still are prohibited from crossing.

The thunderstorm, which was close to the south shore at the time of the closure, was moving north, causing low visibility and difficult driving conditions, authorities said. Also, the wind speed in the storm was 45 to 50 mph, according to police. At the time of the reopening, winds still were about 30 mph from the east-southeast, prompting the restrictions.
