Very Strong earthquake - Central Italy - at least 37 dead

Last update: August 24, 2016 at 10:53 am by By Armand Vervaeck and Dr. James Daniell
UPDATE 10:00am GMT: At least 37 dead are being reported with around 2500 homeless. We do not have the locations of the deaths apart from the original 21. We hope that the toll will hopefully not reach the upper bounds of the models. People are still trapped in certain towns close to the epicenter.
UPDATE 8:07am GMT: Good news from Nocera near the epicenter where they report damage to be not as significant as it could have been due to the strong use of earthquake resistant codes in their buildings.
UPDATE 8:05am GMT: In past events like L'Aquila the final death toll was 308, and at 12 hours, the death toll was reported to be around 92.
It is likely therefore, although being of a lesser impact than the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake, that the death toll will rise to at least 50 with the significant number of trapped people.
UPDATE 8:00am GMT: 11 of these 21 are in Lazio (5 in Amatrice); and 10 in Marche at Pescara del Tronto (Ascoli Piceno).
UPDATE 7:51am GMT: At least 21 people have been killed and many more are trapped under the rubble.
The theoretical models of CATDAT show a median of 38 deaths with a range between 9 and 126 deaths; and an average $4.3 billion USD damage with a range from $1.6-8.5 billion.
There is a significant amount of improvement in some towns with better building practices therefore it is hoped this will be reduced.
Theoretical models from USGS show the highest percentage chance between 100-1000 deaths (33%) and 10-100 deaths (31%). They also believe losses will be over $1 billion.

Strong Quake & Aftershocks Hit Italy

    Credit EMSC-CSEM

    #11,656

A very shallow, strong M6.2 earthquake struck central Italy overnight, heavily damaging several small towns, and was felt (see map above) widely across the region. The initial quake has been followed by more than 100 aftershocks, with several of them in the 5.0-5.5 magnitude range.
    Magnitude Mw 6.2
    Region CENTRAL ITALY
    Date time 2016-08-24 01:36:32.3 UTC
    Location 42.71 N ; 13.22 E
    Depth 4 km
Distances 109 km NE of Roma, Italy / pop: 2,563,241 / local time: 03:36:32.3 2016-08-24
    43 km N of L?Aquila, Italy / pop: 68,503 / local time: 03:36:32.3 2016-08-24
    14 km E of Maltignano, Italy / pop: 2,514 / local time: 03:36:32.3 2016-08-24
Rescue efforts are underway, with reportedly many people trapped in the rubble. CNN is reporting at least 21 deaths, although that number could certainly go higher.

While we tend to think of the Pacific's ring of fire and central Asia when it comes to seismic activity, much of Europe is vulnerable as well. Below you?ll find the 2013 SHARE (Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe) seismic hazard map.

In 2011, inA Look At Europe?s Seismic Risks, we took a look at some of the most devastating earthquakes to strike Europe over the past 700 years, including the quake that leveled the Swiss town of Basel in 1356 and the horrific earthquake and tsunami that struck Portugal in 1755 on November 1st (All Saint?s Day).
Also in 2011 (see UNDP: Supercities At Seismic Risk) we saw a report that stated that half of the world?s supercities (urban areas with 2 million ? 15 million inhabitants) are at high risk for seismic activity.
In January of 2012 (see UN Agency Warns On Global Seismic Risks), the United Nations International Strategy For Disaster Reduction(UNIDSR.Org) issued a cautionary warning about ignoring seismic threats.
Last night's tragedy comes just hours before Germany is expected to announce what role their citizens should play in preparing for disasters (natural or otherwise).
Three days ago, in German Govt. Contemplates Mandating Personal Preparedness, we looked at a proposal that all German households have 10 days worth of emergency supplies in the event of a national emergency.

Last night?s temblor is a reminder that disasters can strike anytime, and anywhere, and preparedness isn?t just for those who live on major fault lines or in the historic path of hurricanes and typhoons.
Every home should have no less than a 72-hour supply of emergency food and water, a good first aid kit, emergency lighting (not candles!), a battery operated radio, and a disaster plan.
And three days should be considered a minimum. Ten days is a far better goal.
Starting next week FEMA and Ready.gov will spend the month of September promoting National Preparedness Month through community events, drills, and exercises.

Because in any emergency, the advantage goes to those who were prepared.

"At moments of trouble Italy knows how to cope. No family, no city, no hamlet will be left alone," he said.

At least 73 people were killed in the 6.2 magnitude quake, which sent residents fleeing their homes and running into the streets. A family of four were also trapped under the rubble and showing no signs of life.

At least 120 killed as quake flattens towns in central Italy

By Steve Scherer | ACCUMOLI, ITALY

An earthquake flattened towns in central Italy in the early hours of Wednesday, killing at least 120 people and burying some alive in their sleep, with volunteers and firefighters racing to free those trapped under mounds of rubble as darkness fell.

The quake razed mountain homes and buckled roads in a cluster of communities some 140 km (85 miles) east of Rome. It was powerful enough to be felt in Bologna to the north and Naples to the south, each more than 220 km from the epicenter.

                  From the section Europe

The death toll in the Italian earthquake stands at 241 as rescuers continue efforts to find survivors.

Dozens of people are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy.

There have been hundreds of aftershocks since the quake struck, hampering relief efforts and damaging already unstable buildings.

More than 4,300 rescuers are using heavy machinery and their bare hands.

Italy quake death toll hits 250 as rescuers search demolished towns

By Steve Scherer and Gabriele Pileri | AMATRICE, ITALY

The death toll from a devastating earthquake in central Italy climbed to at least 250 on Thursday and could rise further with rescue teams working for a second day to try to find survivors under the rubble of flattened towns.
                    ...
Many of those killed or injured were holidaymakers in the four worst-hit towns - Amatrice, Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto and Accumoli - where seasonal visitors swell populations by up to tenfold the summer.

That makes it harder to track the deaths.
                    ...
The mayor said the bodies of 15-20 tourists were believed to be under the rubble of the town's Hotel Roma, which he said had about 32 guests when it collapsed on Wednesday morning.
                    ...
About 365 people injured in Wednesday's quake were hospitalized, the Civil Protection department said, adding that about 5,000 people, including police, firefighters, army troops and volunteers, were involved in post-quake operations.

AMATRICE, Italy ? The mayor of this medieval mountain town, which suffered the largest number of casualties from a devastating earthquake in central Italy, said Friday that two heavily damaged bridges have been closed, threatening to cut the town off from the outside world.

Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said he was working with authorities to find alternative routes to bypass the damaged bridges. "We hope to God it works, because otherwise, with the damaged stretch of road, we are without any connection" to the main roads, he said.

Rescuers believe they have found more bodies buried deep in the rubble of the ruined town of Amatrice, five days after a devastating earthquake struck central Italy, killing at least 290 people.

Residents of the hill town estimated that up to 10 people were still missing and emergency services said they had located three corpses in Amatrice's Hotel Roma, which, like much of the historic center, was wrecked by Wednesday's quake.
