Blasts from massive chemical fire rock Canberra
Updated September 16, 2011 19:33:56
The north Canberra suburb of Mitchell will remain shutdown over the weekend after a chemical fire sent a plume of potentially toxic smoke streaming over the nation's capital.
Firefighters say they are hopeful they will be able to extinguish the fire by tomorrow and there are warnings for some residents to remain inside their homes tonight as a precaution.
Authorities have been applying a foam blanket over water and say the flames are contained and under control, but crews are still on site and could remain so for several days.
And there is a warning that while the fire continues to burn, there is a danger of further explosions.
The fire broke out at a building in an industrial estate at Dacre Street about midnight on Thursday.
