    June 17, 2010
    Situation Update
Today, metallic sheen was observed in the Gulf of Mexico along the beaches of Orange Beach from the intersection of Hwy 161/180 to Perdido Pass. Silver sheen was observed in Gulf Shores from Kiva Dunes to the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge.

Perdido Pass has been navigationally restricted according to tide by the US Coast Guard.

On June 9, 2010, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) expanded swimming advisories due to the oiling in Perdido Pass, Mississippi Sound, and Heron Bay. ADPH is posting advisories not to swim in Bayou St. John, Terry Cove, Cotton Bayou, and Old River or in Alabama waters west of the Dauphin Island Bridge, also known as Mississippi Sound. ADPH previously had advised individuals not to swim in Alabama gulf waters or in bay waters immediately adjacent to Fort Morgan.

All Alabama oyster beds remain closed as a precaution.
All waters in the Gulf of Mexico including Pelican Bay and the waters of Mobile Bay east of the Mobile Ship Channel and south of a line from Mobile Ship Channel Marker Number 22 to Little Point Clear on the North side of Fort Morgan Peninsula are closed to fishing. See page # 19.

National Marine Fisheries Service modified is Fishery Bulletin yesterday. 80,806 mi2 (209,286 km2), or about 33% of the Gulf of Mexico exclusive economic zone is now closed to fishing. See page # 15.

Three SCAT teams were mobilized on June 16, 2010. The first team surveyed the south side of Ono Island beginning on the west side and traveling approximately 1.5 miles. A thin layer of oil was observed on the beach and in the sea grasses close to shore. The second team surveyed from the Gulf Shores Public Beach Parking area to Laguna Key.

Multiple mousse patties were observed with heavier oil observed just offshore. Subsurface tar balls were also observed. The third team surveyed the north side of Little Dauphin Island. A few small tar balls and oiled debris were observed.

Four SCAT teams will be mobilized today, June 17, 2010.

      Alabama Unified Command Briefing

      6/21/2010

      Excerpt:

      Situation Update

ENVIRONMENTAL: ALNG reported yesterday: During the AM mission, Mobile Bay and Mississippi Sound were surveyed.

No oil or sheen were observed. During the PM air mission, a light sheen intermixed with emulsified oil was observed from Perdido Pass to the area of Little Lagoon Pass.
HEALTH: On Friday, June 18, 2010, ADPH lifted its advisory for the Mississippi Sound north of Dauphin Island west of the bridge as well as the Gulf fronting beach waters on the south side of Dauphin Island.

TRAJECTORY: NOAA's Surface Oil Forecast projections continue to show currents carrying the bulk of the oil eastward. Coastal regions between DI and Panama City continue to be threatened by shoreline contacts within the forecast period - through Wednesday, June 23, 2010. OF
NOTE: A SE wind component through Wednesday tends to indicate an increase in potential shoreline contact. Pay close attention to the line of uncertainty and northern edge of light oil each day. (http://response.restoration.noaa.gov)
June 21, 2010 All information in red denotes changes or additions from previous days Situation Report. Page 4

      OPERATIONS
o Offshore: Oil recovery operations continue and are focused on the leading edge of the heavy oil.
o Near shore: Today: Task Forces 2 with - 11 skimmers attached including 1 VOSS, 2 shallow water barge, and 8 drums - are expected to conduct skimming nearshore off DI and Mobile Bay mouth. Task Force 4 - with 12 skimmers attached including 1 MARCO V, 1 VOSS, 2 shallow water barges, and 8 drums is expected to skim in protected waters near Perdido Pass . Task Force 3 has been relocated to Pensacola Bay. Task Force 5 - with 11 skimmers attached including 1 VOSS, 2 shallow water barges, and 8 drums - is expected to skim protected waters near Petit Bois Island near the Alabama - Mississippi state line. Yesterday, 180 VOO vessels capable of oil collecting operated in coastal Alabama; a total of 870 VOO vessels operated in coastal Alabama. VOO identification flags have arrived and will be affixed to each VOO vessel beginning today. [Source COP, Mobile Sector 21 June 2010, and 0600 briefing].
o Onshore: Gulf fronting beach clean-up continued yesterday and will continue today on DI and Baldwin gulf fronting beaches. Night operations continued as well. 2 beach sweepers worked last night cleaning 3 miles of shoreline near Ft. Morgan removing 600 lbs of tar. 2 machines worked near OB cleaning 2 miles and removing 300 lbs tar. Cleanup strategy continues to evolve to meet changing conditions; "coffee grounds" oil in the surf will be recovered utilizing swimming pool leaf nets. Options are being tested to recover submerged sub-tidal tar mats ranging from a few mm thick to 12" thick 3-5 feet in the surf. A vaccuum system with a filter will be utilized. Of the estimated 10 miles of Gulf fronting beaches heavily impacted a week ago, 9 miles are mostly cleaned. 20 - 25 VOOs worked along shore in the OB area dragging sorbent boom; about 100 total boats worked the OB area yesterday.

SCAT: Teams 3 and 5 worked Alabama yesterday. Team 3 surveyed the GS area observing mousse. Team 5 surveyed the GS area as well observing mousse.

NAVIGATIONAL RESTRICTIONS: Perdido Pass has been navigationally restricted according to tide by the US Coast Guard.

      EDIBLE FISHES:

        DEEP WATER HORIZON/MISSISSIPPI CANYON 252
        Alabama Unified Command Briefing

        Excerpt:
        6/25/2010

        Situation Update

ENVIRONMENTAL: ADEM Air Ops: During the AM mission, patches of oil and sheen were observed from south of Dauphin Island to Perdido Pass. Immediately south of Perdido Pass, nine miles offshore and thirteen miles offshore, an area of light oil and streamers were observed. Some areas of light sheen and tar balls could be seen inside the pass and into Perdido Bay. Light oil and tar balls were observed impacting the shoreline from Perdido Pass to Ft. Morgan. Light oil and tar balls were seen at the west end of Dauphin Island. During the PM mission, sheen and patches of oil were observed from Perdido Pass to the Mississippi state line. Patches of light oil were observed 7 miles south of Gulf Shores and a large area of heavy oil was observed 7 miles south of Perdido Pass. Light sheen and patches of oil could be seen north of Perdido Pass with light sheen and patches of oil impacting the shoreline from Perdido Pass to Ft. Morgan. Medium oil was observed at the shoreline near the state fishing pier and extended west for approximately one half mile. Oil had washed ashore in an area on the west end of Dauphin Island.

HEALTH: Yesterday, ADPH issued a swimming advisory for the Alabama waters west of the Dauphin Island Bridge, also known as the Mississippi Sound. Trajectories continue to predict impact on the Baldwin County beaches over the next 72 hours, so no advisories will be lifted.

AIR MONITORING: Slight crude oil odors were reported along Highway 182 in Alabama. There were no reports of visible oil. [Source: CTEH?s Air Monitoring Activities Oil Spill Daily Summary for June 24, 2010]

TRAJECTORY: Winds are forecast to be predominantly easterly (E/ESE) through Sunday at speeds of 7-15 kts. The northern edge of the slick continues to move northwest threatening the barrier islands of Mississippi/Alabama and the Florida Panhandle east to Freeport. Under these persistent easterly winds, the Chandeleur Islands, Breton Sound and the Mississippi Delta are also increasingly threatened by shoreline contacts in this forecast period. Models suggest westward currents developing south of the Delta may begin moving oil west towards Terrebonne Bay. (http://response.restoration.noaa.gov)

        OPERATIONS
o Offshore: Mighty Servant III collected 667 bbls off Orange Beach. The M/V Cheramie Botruc 40 collected 300 bbls south of Perdido Pass.
o Near shore: Task Forces 2 with - 4 skimmers attached including 1 MARCO V, 1 VOSS, 2 shallow water barges ? skimming at entrance to Mobile Bay. Task Force 4 - with 4 skimmers attached including 1 MARCO V, 1 VOSS, 2 shallow water barges ? scouted between Perdido Pass and Pensacola. Task Force 5 - with 4 skimmers attached including 1 MARCO V, 1 VOSS, 2 shallow water barges ? Scouted oil in area of Dauphin and Horn Island. [Source COP, Mobile Sector 24 June 2010, 0600 briefing].
o The Inland Water Skimming Task Force has stood up. They will operate skimmers from the following locations: Dauphin Island ? 8 skimmers, Theodore ? 4 skimmers, and Bayou la Batre ? 5 skimmers.
o Onshore: Last night ? About 6.5 miles of beach was cleaned in Gulf Shores State Park, State Pier, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach.

SCAT: Teams 3, 5, and 7 worked in Alabama yesterday. Team 3 surveyed the Gulf side of East Dauphin Island by ATV. No oil observed. Team 5 surveyed the area west of Little Lagoon Pass. They observed a fresh covering of mousse in the mid and upper intertidal zone. The mousse varied in size with more washing ashore. A sporadic coating of tarballs was observed on the beach and bands of fresh oil were also observed in the water just off of the beach. Team 7 surveyed the Perdido Pass area. Tarballs were observed onshore with heavier concentrations of tarballs observed within the pass. Concentrated bands of tarballs were observed east of the Pass on the Gulf side and ribbons of oil were observed approximately 10 meters offshore.

NAVIGATIONAL RESTRICTIONS: Perdido Pass has been navigationally restricted according to tide by the US Coast Guard.

        EDIBLE FISHES:
o All Alabama oyster beds remain closed as a precaution.
o On June 24, 2010, ADCNR announced the opening for recreational catch and release fishing in State waters closed to fishing in response to the presence of oil. Closed State waters include all Gulf waters out to the 3-mile State/Federal line, Mississippi Sound avoiding Katrina Cut, and the area south of a line extending east from Mobile Ship Channel Marker 22 to Little Point Clear.(See page#14)
