PLAQUEMINES, La. ? Oil has been spotted in the waters off the coast of Plaquemines Parish near Venice, according to Parish President Billy Nungesser.

The oil slick is believed to be seven miles in length, according to multiple reports.

The oil was spotted two miles east-southeast from Baptiste Collete, which is across the Mississippi River from Venice, according to Nungesser, by a charter fishing captain. The parish's port vessel is en route to the where the oil was reported, said Nungesser.

The Coast Guard is sending up a helicopter to fly over the area, according to Petty Officer Steve Lehmann.

"It looks like the same oil that has been surfacing in Bay Jimmy," said Nungesser, who was sent pictures of the oil early Wednesday morning. "It doesn't look like new, fresh oil."

Asked if the oil could be from the BP oil spill that has ravaged the coast and marshes of Plaquemines Parish, "I have no reason to believe otherwise," said Nungesser, adding that the parish was not notified of any busted wellheads in the area that could have possibly spewed the oil.
