    A norovirus warning has been issued for seafood lovers who collect shellfish from several river mouths around Christchurch.

    Shellfish with extremely high levels of norovirus have been found in the Avon and Heathcote river mouths.

    Norovirus warning for shellfish

    Seafood lovers are being urged not to dig for their own shellfish in Christchurch river mouths after "extremely high levels of norovirus" were detected.

    A health warning has been issued after contaminated shellfish were found in the Avon and the Heathcote river mouths.

    There were also high levels of norovirus in shellfish found at other locations in the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.

    Symptoms of norovirus include vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach aches. People may also have a fever, chills, headache and muscle aches.

    Pink said the public should remember that all river and seawater in and around Christchurch should be avoided
