BATON ROUGE - Authorities have closed River Road between Brightside Drive and Ben Hur Road to get a better look at just how much water is seeping into the Duncan Pointe area from the swollen Mississippi River.

Crews will place additional sandbags at the levee and put in seepage monitors to help them with the survey. They ultimately hope to get enough information to craft a permanent solution for that area, according to Steve Wilson with the Pontchartrain Levee District.

BATON ROUGE -- The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that all lanes of River Road (La. 327) will completely close at Brightside Drive to Ben Hur Road, a distance of less than a mile. The closure is expected to last approximately three days. DOTD state detour routes are Skip Bertman Drive on the northern end and Gardere Lane on the southern end of the closure.

The total closure of River Road is necessary to allow crews from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, the Department of Transportation and Development and the Pontchartrain Levee District to complete levee work, which is being coordinated with the City of Baton Rouge and the East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Crews will place additional sand bags on the levee, install seepage monitors and perform levee survey work. This work is being performed as a precautionary measure and to collect survey data. The Duncan Point area is a known seepage area and these actions will ensure the continued performance of the protection system. There is no immediate threat of flooding or levee performance.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is committed to delivering transportation and public works systems that enhance the quality of life. In addition to more than 16,600 miles of roadway, including over 890 miles of interstate, DOTD supports the development of the state's aviation, marine and rail infrastructures. Through this work, we are able to facilitate economic development, create job opportunities, improve vital evacuation routes, and make critical freight corridors safer and more efficient.
