Taipei, Jan. 27 (CNA) ...

Wu Yun-hui (吳允暉), an assistant researcher of the Eastern Marine Biology Research Center of the Fisheries Research Institute under the Council of Agriculture, said he has been researching the fish for two years and this was the first time he has witnessed them in such great numbers.
Around 250 of the huge fish were spotted Monday and another 70 Tuesday, mostly small-sized weighing between 30 kg-50 kg. They are the word's heaviest known bony fish, with an average adult weight of around 1,000 kg.

The large numbers are probably due to low temperatures in Japanese waters and large numbers of jellyfish, its staple diet, around Taiwan waters, he said.
Large numbers of ocean sunfish (曼波魚 Mola mola) have shown up in waters off Taitung in a rare phenomenon that experts say could possibly be in reaction to low temperatures in the waters around Japan.
