Long-term consequences of prenatal stress and neurotoxicants exposure on neurodevelopment
Highlights
?Exposure to insults inducing adverse conditions in-utero may have negative effects on the development of target organs, disrupting homeostasis and increasing the risk of adult diseases. ?Current understanding presumes that the interactions of multiple factors, including environmental input, may lead to different disorders. ?This paper reviews the existing literature and our own work on the long term neurobiological consequences of gestational exposure to stress and toxicants. ?From all possible neurological pathologies, prenatal stress has been predominantly associated with diverse psycho-and psychiatric pathologies. ?Developmental exposure of animals or humans to chemicals, such as lead and methylmercury (MeHg) and perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) has demonstrated that interference with one or more developmental processes can lead to nervous system disorders.
