Gov't to cease special relief for asbestos-related illness victims
From March 27, the government will cease providing relief funds for people who died of asbestos-related cancers and did not apply for workers compensation on time.
Workers compensation for asbestos-related illnesses must be made within five years after the death of the victim. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare currently provides relief funds to the surviving family of victims of asbestos-related lung cancer and mesothelioma -- cancer of the protective lining covering many of the body's internal organs -- but who did not apply for workers compensation as they did not know their illnesses were caused by asbestos....
