Manila, Philippines (CNN) -- At least 180 people are dead after Tropical Storm Washi pummeled the Philippines, officials said Saturday.
The vast majority of the bodies were found in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, according to military officials and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Five people were killed in a landslide, but all others died in flash flooding.
The provinces of Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte were also hit, said Benito Ramos, chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
About 400 people are missing after the storm, which is called Sendong locally. More than 2,000 have been rescued, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Storms pound Philippines in the thick of night, kill at least 436
Entire families wiped out by Typhoon Washi; many still unaccounted for, say officials

MANILA, Philippines ? Pounding rain from a tropical storm swelled rivers and sent walls of water crushing into two southern Philippine cities in the thick of night, killing at least 436 people, many caught in their beds, officials said Saturday.
Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang told The Associated Press that the latest toll was based on a body count in funeral parlors.
She said that 215 died in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in nearby Iligan cities, and the rest in several other southern and central provinces.

ILIGAN, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) - More than 600 people were feared killed on Saturday when tropical storm "Sendong" (international name: Washi) whipped the southern Philippines, unleashing mammoth floods across vast areas of the country.

Relief workers said that 440 people had died and nearly 200 left missing after the storm wreaked havoc, destroying whole neighborhoods.

About 20,000 soldiers had been mobilized in a huge rescue and relief operation across the stricken north coast of the island of Mindanao, where the major ports of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan were worst hit.

Cagayan de Oro city reported 215 dead, and nearby Iligan city lost 144 residents, Philippine National Red Cross secretary-general Gwen Pang told AFP.
