    Mystery infection sparks emergency measures

PART of a ward has been closed following a suspected virus outbreak at a Yorkshire hospital.

Infection control experts at Dewsbury District Hospital are carrying out tests to discover the cause of illness which has affected three patients.

The three have been struck down with diarrhoea. The condition of the patients was not known last night but all three were being treated on the high-dependency unit, which treats a range of serious conditions.

The patients are now in isolation rooms to prevent the spread of the illness. A small area of the high dependency unit has been closed to new admissions.

A hospital spokeswoman said the outbreak had affected one bay in the unit. Tests are being carried out to determine the cause, she said.

This week the trust which runs Dewsbury is launching a campaign to get visitors to its hospitals to use an alcohol-based gel as they enter and leave wards..
