Niger State Commissioner for health, Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi , said Monday that two people have died and 10 hospitalised as a result of gastro-intestinal related disorder in Dikko area of Gurara local government area of the state.
He however added that cholera was not the cause of the deaths.
Abdullahi who disclosed this to journalists in Minna said the death of the two persons and the hospitalisation of 10 was the result of contamination from the drinking water in the area.
?A medical analysis was immediately conducted and it was discovered that the two died of acute dysentery as a result of contamination from the water that was also responsible for the hospitalisation of 10 people in Gurara,? he said.
The Commissioner said that to forestall a recurrence, the Ministry of Water Resources and the state Water Board have been alerted to urgently repair the broken down borehole in the place, adding that it was the stream which was the only source of water in the community that caused the deaths.
