Health strengthens epidemiological surveillance to prevent deaths from diarrhea in Tamaulipas MX
By : Chantal Diaz Martinez | Gazette Tamaulipas

The Tamaulipas Secretariat of Health to establish an epidemiological surveillance in the event of an outbreak of diarrhea this time is detected, said state epidemiologist Alfredo Rodr?guez Trujillo.

This is next due to the Easter period and that's when the heats begin stronger and therefore increasing the rate of gastrointestinal diseases.

He said that so far have about two thousand cases of diarrhea per week throughout Tamaulipas, but is expected to increase in five weeks, at least five percent.

That is why it is conducting an epidemiological surveillance in case an outbreak occurs, is detected in time, he reiterated.

Epidemiological surveillance includes monitoring establishments that sell food to be marketed properly.

Besides leading a raid in the water utilities, including Comapa, CEAT and CNA, to monitor water quality and implement prevention activities.

"It's very important that people maintain the measures of prevention, in particular, be very attentive to the preservation of foods, especially perishables," he said.

He said that last year there were 8 deaths in children under 5 who are the most widely watched.

"The deaths showed severe acute diarrheal dehydration and shock," he concluded.

    How to detect?

Diarrhea or gastrointestinal infections are characterized by the presence of watery stool, loose and frequent.

Diarrhea is considered chronic or long when you have had for over 4 weeks. In adults is usually mild and goes away quickly without complications, while in infants and children (especially under age 3), diarrhea can cause dangerous dehydration very quickly.

The most common cause of diarrhea is viral gastroenteritis, a mild viral infection that goes away on its own within a few days and is often called the stomach flu. Appears frequently in small epidemics in schools, neighborhoods and families.

Food poisoning and traveler's diarrhea are two other common causes of diarrhea that occur from the consumption of food or water contaminated with bacteria or parasites.
