Hong Kong: Kindergarten advised to suspend classes (9/09/10)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (September 9) advised SunKids Kindergarten in Tuen Mun to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow as a precautionary measure.

A three-year-old boy in the kindergarten was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) on September 6 in critical condition.

He tested positive for human swine influenza (HSI). He passed away late last night.

Medical surveillance by the CHP today identified two students and a staff member developing fever or respiratory symptoms. They are in stable condition and no hospitalisation was required.

The three-year-old boy's mother was also confirmed to have been infected with HSI. She was admitted to TMH on September 8 and is now in stable condition. The boy's grandmother also had symptoms and she was admitted to Baptist Hospital on September 6 and is now in stable condition. Her specimen tested negative for Influenza A.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.

People are advised to build up good body immunity by having a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking.
