  • HK: CHP investigates case of severe paediatric influenza A infection

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (March 19) investigating a case of severe paediatric influenza A infection, and again urged the public, particularly young children, to get vaccinated promptly and observe strict hand, personal and environmental hygiene amid the winter influenza season. Children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases should promptly seek medical advice if influenza-like symptoms develop.

The 18-month-old baby boy, with good past health, has developed fever since March 12 and was then brought to Accident and Emergency Department of Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) where he was admitted on the same day. He was discharged on March 15 in stable condition. The boy has presented with fever, cough and shortness of breath on March 16 and was admitted to KWH again on March 17 where he was transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for further treatment the next day. He is now in stable condition.

His nasopharyngeal aspirate tested positive for influenza A (H1) virus by Princess Margaret Hospital.
