  • HK: CHP investigates case of severe paediatric influenza A infection

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (February 28) investigating a case of severe paediatric influenza A infection, and again urged the public, particularly young children, to get vaccinated promptly and observe strict hand, personal and environmental hygiene amid the winter influenza season. Children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases should promptly seek medical advice if influenza-like symptoms develop.

The 14-year-old boy, with underlying illness, has developed shortness of breath and decreased general condition since February 25. He attended Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) where he was admitted on February 26 and was transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for further treatment on the same day. He is now in serious condition.

His nasopharyngeal aspirate tested positive for influenza A virus by QMH.

The CHP's initial enquiries revealed that the patient had no travel history during the incubation period. He lives in an institution where no influenza-like illness outbreak was recorded. Investigations are ongoing.
