The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 16) investigating a case of severe paediatric influenza A infection affecting an 11-year-old boy. The patient, with good past health, has presented with cough, fever, chills and dizziness since July 5. He was admitted to a private hospital on July 7. His clinical diagnosis is septic shock. He has been in stable condition all along and was discharged on July 10.
His nasopharyngeal swab tested positive for influenza A (H3) upon laboratory testing by the hospital.
Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient had no travel history during the incubation period. His home contacts remain asymptomatic. Investigation is ongoing.
