  • HK: Case of severe paediatric influenza A infection under CHP investigation

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 10) investigating a case of severe paediatric influenza A infection affecting a one-year-old boy.

The patient, with good past health, has presented with fever, cough and shortness of breath since July 6. He was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on July 8 and was subsequently transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for further management on the same day.

His clinical diagnosis is pneumonia and his current condition is critical.

His nasopharyngeal swab tested positive for influenza A upon laboratory testing by Queen Mary Hospital.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient had no travel history during the incubation period. One of his home contacts had mild respiratory symptoms and is in stable a condition.
