The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (September 26):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 1,190 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 773 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 26,078 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 227 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 207 cases are in stable condition, eight in serious and 12 in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 86-year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus, renal disease and chronic brain heamorrhage disease of North District Hospital (NDH). He developed fever and upper respiratory symptoms on September 11. The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of NDH on September 19 and was admitted to isolation ward for clincal treatment. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on September 20 and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated today and was under close monitoring. The patient is now in critical condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 17 staff members of public hospitals (six male and 11 female, including seven nurses, two allied health professionals and eight supporting staff).

So far there were 725 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 557 have already recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

The Department of Health today (September 26) advised a special school to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (HSI) in the school.

Investigation revealed that 12 students, aged between five and 14, and a staff member at the school developed influenza-like illness symptoms since September 22.

Eight of them required hospitalisation. All affected persons are in stable condition.

Laboratory results showed that six students were confirmed to have been infected with HSI. The department has visited the school and advised staff on infection control measures. The school has been put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.

Hong Kong: HA update on Designated Flu Clinic and human swine influenza patients (9/28/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (September 28):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provided treatment to a total of 1,319 patients with flu-like symptoms.

There were 441 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today.

This brings to 26,987 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 276 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 254 cases are in stable condition, 12 in serious and 10 in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 52-year-old male patient of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH). The patient developed flu symptoms on September 27 and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit via the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH on the same day. Positive result for human swine influenza was confirmed today. The patient received Tamiflu and antibiotics. He is on ventilation support. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 19 staff members of public hospitals (five male and 14 female, comprising two doctors, nine nurses, four allied health professionals, one clerk and three supporting staff).

So far 755 HA staff members have been confirmed with human swine influenza.

Among them, 590 have already recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that the test for human swine influenza is not routine.

However, this will not affect the treatment of patients.

Under normal circumstances, both the DFCs and Accident & Emergency Departments will only conduct laboratory tests for human swine influenza on the following specific groups of patients:
                          • Pregnant women
                          • Children 12 months old or under
                          • Healthcare workers including staff of residential homes
                          • Patients living in institutions without outbreak
                          • Influenza patients with persistent fever (over 38C) or whose condition deteriorate 48 hours after treatment

Public hospitals and clinics will only prescribe symptom control medication to influenza patients with mild condition.

Patients can consider seeking consultation first with private hospitals and clinics.

Hong Kong: Fatal case of human swine influenza recorded (9/28/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health received notification from Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH) yesterday evening (September 27) about the death of a 55-year-old man suspected to have been infected with human swine influenza (HSI). The patient presented to HKSH yesterday morning with a history of fever and respiratory symptoms since September 19. On admission, he was found to have severe pneumonia. His condition deteriorated rapidly and he passed away in the afternoon of the same day. Laboratory tests on his respiratory specimens were positive for HSI today (September 28).

Investigations revealed that the man was a staff member of a school in Aberdeen.

He had been on sick leave in the past week.

Earlier this month, the school concerned had reported an influenza outbreak. Staff of CHP had visited the school on September 1 and health advice was given.

A total of 16 students had developed influenza-like-illness between August 28 and September 11. Six of them were confirmed to have HSI. All of the affected students have recovered.

The school was put under medical surveillance and no new cases were detected after September 11. Staff of the CHP visited the school again this afternoon and noted that the number of students on sick leave was at baseline level and that there was no new influenza-like-illness outbreak.

General health advice was given to the school. The case has been referred to the Coroner for investigation.

CHP will report the case to the World Health Organisation.
