    ‎30 September ‎2011

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating a fatal case of Influenza A and Group A Streptococcal infection involving a 39-year-old man.

The patient, who came to Hong Kong for vacation on September 22, developed cough with right-side chest pain, haemoptysis and shortness of breath and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on September 26.

He was diagnosed as having severe pneumonia with septic shock and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment. His condition deteriorated quickly and he succumbed on September 28.

The case was referred to the coroner.

The patient's nasopharyngeal swab taken on September 26 tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1) while his tracheal aspirate grew Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A).
